Interstate Rest Area RV Dump Areas
Will be dry camping in a friends drive for a couple of nights and will need to dump tanks on way home. Noticed on last outing that in Louisiana that the rest area dump sites have locks on the sewer lid. In Alabama they have the water off and similar thing in Tennessee. Was wondering about outher states. Lady in Louisina said they were having issues with sewage being improperly dumped. Any one else seeing this? We do not do much dry camping, generally dump at cg, but in this case have to attend a funeral in Mississippi this week end.

A lot of states and even some private businesses are securing or discontinuing services because of abuse.
Like many other things people perceive as free, it gets abused until the provider has to take steps to prevent the abuse. Either by limiting access (locks, water off, etc.) or by discontinuing it all together. Flying J has had to close dump stations in some of their locations because of improper dumping.

Georgia closed all the rest area dump sites, probably for same reason. Later RJD

Many of the Pilot and Flying J truck stops have them. If you are a Good Sam member, I think the cost is $5.

In La. you have to have the security guard unlock the dump, he will also watch that you do it correctly.

The 'ppop cop' I spoke to told me they locked them after seeing a couple of tanker trucks dumping who knows what into the dump.

Most private campgrounds will allow you to use their dumps for a fee. When we went thru Georgia this winter on I-75, their rest areas were still allowing clean outs, so don't know what happened there.

Add California to the list of closed Rest Stop sewers. When I ask a "ranger" at one Rest Stop about it, he told me that the state had experienced a lot of kids dumping rocks down the sewer so they were gradually stopping this service at the rest areas. So while I'm not aware if all Rest Stops in the state are now bolted down, but I would not count on them being open in California.

The Flying J near us has free dumping at a few pumps. It was crazy to find them the first time but they are there.

Our kids live in Vicksburg. We dry camp in their drive. We always dump between Brandon and Meridian on I20 east bound. Last trip was January.
