Interstate travel

I'm in my third season as a tt owner. The furthest we've ventured so far was 2 hrs on state highways. No big deal. We have a trip to SD planned this summer. ~12 hrs. Should I stick to state roads or brave the interstate @ 65 mph? I'm a little nervous about every idiot driving up my a** on interstates with 70+ speed limits.

Drive at a speed you are comfortable with. I like to travel between 60-65 however dependent on conditions it could be less. The minimum limits are usually less than 60.

We do the interstates but much prefer good state roads for scenery and comfort and seldom drive over 60mph on any of them.

X2...we have over 50k miles towing a camper and a lot of it on Interstates. We stay in the RH lane at about 60 MPH and only worry about the guy in front or next to us. Just fyi, my son drives for Swift and they are limited to 62 MPH...not everyone drives 70-80.

Welcome to the Forest River Forum.

I prefer to use the Interstate highways. I drive between 62 – 65 MPH and haven’t had anyone try to run up my rear end yet. This includes the Interstate highways with a 75 MPH speed limit. I’ve been RVing and driving like this since 2003. I don’t like state roads because of all the towns and light signals you encounter.

I stay between 60 and 65 on the interstates too. I stay in right hand lane so I can bail if need be. Here in Atlanta 70 is merely a suggestion as are lane lines. Someone runs into the back of me I hope I feel it. Too bad for them.

We traveled from Ohio to Idaho via Interstate. Came back through SD. Our top speed was 65 mph. Just stay in the right lane, watch your "P"s & "Q"s and you will be fine. Focus on your rig, sit back and enjoy the adventure. Things can happen anywhere. Most of the traffic wasn't all that heavy. Often times, I found an 18 wheeler that wasn't in a big hurry and I would drop in behind it at a safe distance. You can try it for a ways and if you feel overwhelmed, take an Exit and pick an alternate route. Just my opinion.

Welcome. The way I see it on Interstate driving, there are two lanes, if they don't like my speed they can go around. The minimum speed on Interstate around me is 40 mph. I usually run between 60-65 in normal conditions. If inclement weather and I have to run 40-50 I usually turn my flashers on. I always run with my lights on any road, State, parish/county.

You are probably safer on interstates than other highways due to lanes are wider, escape routes are available and for the most part you can drive at a constant speed and folks that come up behind you can pass unhindered by oncoming traffic. Just pick your speed, relax, enjoy the drive, be observant and forget whose behind you. They have the option to pass or follow.

One thing I like to do on interstates as I approach urban areas with heavier traffic and closer exits is to move one lane over to allow others to merge in without disturbing my speed. I haven't had anyone try to run up my back yet but I've had to slam on the brakes or dodge merging traffic a few times. You'd think they'd see us and adjust...but that would be wishful thinking!

x2 had one today cut it real close, they come out off the far left lane and dash three lanes over to exit. and the bad thing was the exit lane was about 5/8 mile long and NO close traffic behind us in any lane.

I'm not too worried about my driving skills, I drive fire trucks for a living, I'm more worried about the other idiots.

In areas with 3 lanes I try to take the middle lane. Been in the "who has the most braking power" situations with merging cell phone drivers when in the right lane and no escape to the next lane to the left. In most areas I stay in the right lane unless a merge is coming up with traffic entering.

Interstate (and those wonderful tolls) for me. I set cc @ 65. I like night driving (but I live in the congested Northeast) when you don't have stop and go driving...when possible.

We took I 80 to and from SD last July, wonderful trip, on the way there we had high winds so we kept it at 55 most of the way there. No problem with others they just went around us. Enjoy the drive, its half the fun.

Most people will be in the left lane any way. Some cannot read the sign to stay in the RH Lane.

I and I see a lot of others do is move over to the left lane so I am not blinded by the back of 18 whr or RV.

If one is tailgating you so they can get better gas mileage just drop your speed. If not on a schedule I will do it slowly to see how long the dummy will stay there. Think 47 is my record. Some one will blow by and remind them they can go 65 to 75.

Speed limit on the freeway was raised to 80 MPH for cars and 70 MPH for big trucks in urban areas here in ID. last year.

When we went to Yellowstone for the 4th of July we took I-84 to I-86 to I-15 then across State 20 at no time did anyone try to climb up my tailpipe.

Between 65-70 on the freeway and the posted limit on state roads.

As someone posted drive where you are comfortable and let the other drivers deal with their problems.

We do like the sites and laid back pace of the side roads, but at that distance I would be inclined to run the interstate.
Check each state for towing speeds....here its 55....not enforce unless there is an incident....Plus it gives you more reaction distance, decreased stopping distance better MPG, and most of the idiots will go by and out of your danger zone shortly.
will 2nd the move to the middle lane in busy city areas to avoid the merging traffic.
Enjoy the trip.
