Its a freaking mystery...

So today we realized we left a wine cooler type beverage in the pantry over the sink over the winter. It was on its side. The bottle was not broken, and the cap was still tight and sealed. But somehow the bottle was only half full.

Ok, if that aint freaky enough, there was a bit of a sticky mess in the bottom of the cabinet, and on the sink counter top below, but i cannot for the life of me find ANY path that it took to get down to the counter. The spill on the counter never touched any wall, so its not like it came down the inside of the wall. Underside of pantry was clean. I'm at a complete loss. It literally looked like someone opened the wine cooler, poured out some on the floor of the pantry, poured some on the sink counter, sealed the bottle back up, and put it back in the pantry.

Anyway... the mess cleaned up pretty easily. I guess the lesson is leave nothing liquid in the camper over winter.

Tim

Really.

I freeze solid ice in the freezer, and at home too, in jugs I cut down for that purpose.

Left alone for months at a time, a FULL jug of ice will be only half.

Leave wine and liquor in cabinet all the time, only had problem one time DW left some low alcohol Arbor Mist in first stop on way to FL in January could smell it and discovered bottom of bottle broke off. So now watch alcohol contend.

The mice and bugs have to have something to help them stay warm. Being small critters as they are the bottle will last a while.

Only thing I have found involving alcohol is while sitting around a nice camp fire for a few nights I have notice the bottle has less in it each night.

Tap on the bottle especially where the sides meet the bottom. There is most likely a thin fracture that is not visible. Could be hidden by the label.

I've seen beer push out around the cap but not push the cap off when frozen.

The ice actually evaporates in the freezer
The wine expanded and leaked out of the cap in the OP's case

WOW! What a coincidence. I've had the same thing happen repeatedly.

You're losing ice by "sublimation." Also why snow goes away even if it's below 32F.

Do this over the sink to avoid another mess to clean up
