These things are not cheap to begin with. Why not provide a free map update any time you want one? Most portable nav systems now do this. Heck, many nav systems for smartphones stay updated and cost nothing!
Overall, I think the Jensen nav system could learn a little more from the likes of Garmin and Magellan. Their text and graphics can at least be seen from the driver on even smaller displays.
