Keeping Mice Out When Stored

We just bought our first RV and it will go into storage this Friday. I have been trying to find the best ways to keep mice out. What are some ways that have worked for you? It will be in a pole barn that the owner said he would put out some poison around the perimeter of the building, but I don't want to take any chances. Thanks!!!

Moth balls seem to work well, both in and around your unit.

Get essential oil of peppermint ( not peppermint oil for cooking). put 2-3 cotton balls in an old cup or glass and add 5- drops of the peppermint oil on the cotton balls. This keeps mice and spiders out and makes the RV smell fresh. I have used this method in my last 3 RVs and never had a mouse. You may have to refresh the oil once every 6-8 wks.

I've been looking but haven't found any of the Victor pest chasers that are battery operated. I won't have use of electricity in my storage facility. Just wondering.

Start with sealing up any places they can get in.

X3 Fresh Cab. And yes, make sure things are sealed. This year we sprayed Mouse Free under our camper and a family's camper next to ours. Won't know how it worked till next Spring since campground is closed. Heard good things though. If my family's camper, a pop-up, has no mice, then we have found something since they have mice every year.

We've always used Bounce dryer sheets placed all around the inside and have never had a mouse. We've done this for many years. Plus when you open it in the spring it smells great-unlike the odor of moth balls.

We have used ORIGINAL Bounce fabric softener sheets in our fifth wheel and our friends cottage to keep our the little critters. I put it everywhere when closing up. In cupboards, in refrigerator , stove, in corners, under furniture , between cushions etc. We have had extremely good results with this and it also leaves the rv smelling great. In the spring I just gather them up. You can still use them for the dryer but they will not suffice to use for the rodent problem again. The major scent will be gone but for the dryer, too much scent is not always a good thing. I have also heard about the essential oils of peppermint and that it works well also. With the fabric softeners, you can put them above curtains and in wheel wells also. Just thought we would tell you how it has worked for us.

The problem with using D con is after the mice eat it they go somewhere and finally die. You may not be able to find them but when they rot you will smell them.

Please do not use poison to control rodents. Almost all of it works by causing the animal to bleed internally which makes it thirsty. It will leave you RV in search of water. The problem is that it then becomes a prime target for a hawk or owl as it is weakened. If eaten by the hawk or owl, they are now poisoned and will die or have brain damage.

Go under your RV and check for any areas where the propane lines or other lines enter the RV.. I use great stuff foam sealant with pest block to seal any area that has a space. Mice can get through areas the size of a dime. I also put down glue traps around the wheels, stabilizers and tongue jack. On the interior we use fresh cab and put down glue traps. Make sure to take out anything the critters can use to make their nest from like paper towels, toilet paper etc.

We heard that chestnuts, with a couple holes drilled in them, scattered underneath the unit, would also work. Not sure about that as we have not tried it.
