Which Lake Isabella are you asking about? My family's vacation home when I was young was at Lake Isabella in MI, but I have a feeling that's not the place you're asking about...

I haven't camped out there yet, even tho it's located 30 miles from me or half hr drive. I'll ask some of my coworkers tomorrow who has camped out there with their trailers and what they can tell me about it. I'll post some info on it tomorrow.

I have asked some of my co-workers, one recommendation is Silver City ghost town near the lake. But they also mentioned it's not recommended to travel with high profile RVs or anything longer than 21' TT with crewcab TV when traveling through the canyon from 178. Getting into the campgrounds is easy part just traveling to lake Isabella through the highway is worse part. It's a two lane hwy and they mentioned that the trailer can end up scraping the side of the canyon walls. As noticeable by the various paint scrapes on the wall. If you take the alternative and longer route through hwy 58 to Caliente, that road will have a lot of curves.
