I asked the DW where she wanted to go for our last trip of the season and she said, "Let's go to the Shenandoah Valley". So we have reservations at the Luray KOA for next weekend.
Anybody have good things to do for retired no kids folks?
Luray Caverns and some wineries are on the list already.
You will have a quiet time. We stayed there couple of weeks ago. Advice: go in 340, not 211. Luray has nice walk/run/bike path along the water. KOA has clean restrooms, laundry, etc wide open center area in campground. See photo taken from steps.
If you are a paddler, paddle or float the Shenandoah. If you are a Civil War buff, within an hour in any direction you can find great pickings. Impress your wife by taking her to dinner at The Inn at Little Washington. Not cheap, but world class dining in the Valley.
Stop at the New Market battlefield where the Virginia Military Academy cadets march from school to battle during the Civil War.
Nice walking mall in downtown Winchester (I like the English pub).
See if there are any concerts at James Madison University at Harrisonburg.
Do drive at least a part of the Skyline Drive. Check out the Big Meadow about mile marker 50. Amazing walk through wildflowers any time of the year. While there checkout the Big Meadow Campground across the road. (NPS) Appalachian Trail runs along the edge. We've stayed there many October weekends. No hookups but a wonderful experience!
