Let my sister-in-law and her whole fam damnily stay in our TT once with the caveat that I use it to live in while doing field work and that when I need it, they must vacate and find their own digs like pronto. They were supposed to be looking for a place of their own while living there but they didn't. I gave them one week notice that I needed the trailer and they became very indignant. So I tossed them out. It took 3 days to clean the thing and make repairs. No one stays in any trailer we own unless it is us and our cats.

If someone wants to borrow your RV for any reason, refer them to a local RV rental company. It's a polite way to say no.

I have let my daughter and granddaughter stay in my 5th wheel when it was parked in my yard under the RV awning. A friend actually asked to borrow it and I told them the only way was that I would haul it to the campsite on Friday night and set it up and then pick it up Sunday afternoon. I also told them that they would be charged for any damages and a cleaning fee if needed. They have never asked to borrow the camper again.

It is NOT hard to say NO to family.

Easiest word in the world. Ask them if you can borrow their house, see what they say. If they say NO, then say "Well then I ain't loaning out mine, either, same reasons".

No way, Jose'...

I've used it as a secondary hotel room when I still had it parked next to the house.

That is...until I sold the house a few months back!

I just bought a park model in an RV park and the two spaces next to me are empty, so if I have company and they'd like to stay there, I'll let them as long as they pay the lot rent (under $350/week).

Cheaper than most decent hotel rooms for two nights...

This question is asked quite often here and about 95% of the responses is NO!

And I would NEVER do it either.

My answer like most would be no.. After loaning my BIL a car for way too long and having to replace an engine mount, cracked exhaust system, suspension, and mystery noises, we’ve learned to not lend out expensive items we wish to continue enjoying.

If you won't lend them money or go into business with them, don't lend them your RV.

A definite no. One son-in-law joked one time about borrowing it. We firmly stated no. Our trailer, our payment and our long term financial liability. In our experience, most people, family or friends, would not take care of our stuff like we do. We have one son-in-law, not the one that asked, that we know would take care of it as we do, possibly better. He would never ask because he feels the same about stuff that he owns.

It's not about their intentions. Or their desire to maintain it well.

But it took me 2+ years and dozens upon dozens of trips to figure it all out. I screwed up stuff along the way. I don't anymore (gulp, I hope). I don't want some Newbie with good intentions trying to figure out how stuff works, and failing. I am not sure I even want them succeeding, either.

I was raised with the mentality that if you borrowed it and it broke, you bought it. Try to get the borrower to agree to that and then start explaining you expectations to them. LOL...

In my family we were all taught not to be mooches so no one has ever asked to borrow my trailer.

The problem will only happen once, as they will not be family members after the first time.

Somewhere in all these replies one proclaimed coming from the top 5% "Life's too short to be stingy". Life is too short ... too short to be used up by relatives, too short to have late in life hard earned dreams poked full of holes, too short to have to deal with half hearted explanations from people that are just going thru the motions of apologies. If they had any sand to start with ... there would be no asking. I road mapped my life to be able to own an RV and travel in retirement ... others in my family just switched to 4X4 and went off road. I'm in the 95% ... NO, Hell NO, Not even after Hell freezes over ... NO.

For the last 35 years I've always had box trucks, vans and/or pickups...

And everyone who remotely knows me always asks me if they can borrow my truck(s) to move!

Or with my box trucks they wanted to take them to the infield of the local NASCAR track!

I've learned my lesson well...I tell them "I'll drive and supervise...nothing else!"
