Looking For Golf Cart Info

Ok the thought of buying a golf cart has peaked my interest mainly just to tool around in my rural neighborhood and maybe if I can figure out how to get it to a campground that allows them however, I really don’t even know what to look for. There are quite a few golf cart sales places were where I live near Lake Norman in NC so they seem to be quite popular.

I see prices all over the place from 2K to almost 10K on CL can I get a basic 101 class on what to look for and not look for ? My budget is in the 2K to 4K ballpark. Should I consider a dealer or look for a private sale ?

First decision... Gas or electric?
Some places will only allow electric.

And don't ask which is best.

Best for me and you are different.

You can buy a lot of golf cart for 2-4k... but if you don't know anything about them, a dealer purchase may be better.

Many campgrounds don't allow gas so I chose electric. I prefer and would only buy a 48v. The batteries are one of the highest priced items on any cart ranging from 750 to nearly 1k dollars. This usually becomes a selling point and price differential. 5-7 years is normal for a decent well taken care of battery group.
I'm a fix it up type of guy so I look for carts with bad or old batteries and use that to get a better price. I bought 2- 2005 Yamaha G22 carts for 1200 ea. with chargers and ran. Batteries I got at Sam's Club for around 700. I sold the spare cart for 2500 for a profit of 600, to give you an idea. That was a few years ago.

Theres some things to also consider like on the Yamahas you have to inspect the chassis real good. The frame can rot out under the batteries if they were boiled over. Some carts have aluminum chassis so that drives the price up sometimes.

With electric carts, the biggest issue/maintenance is the batteries.

If you buy used, make sure the batteries are in good working order and that it comes with a good working charger.

You'll also want to check local codes/laws as to whether it needs lights/turn signals/seat belts. Everyplace is different.

The rest is just bling. A rear folding seat is nice to carry additional folks.
I own 4 but mine are gas. We have 32 acres and take them everywhere.

I picked up a used 99 club car precedent with 2yr old batteries and new charger for 1600. Its a 48v so she weighs around 1k lbs. There is a lighter cart by cricket the sx3. Its a 36v. Its smaller so it didnt work for me.

So why not look at the cricket. Its smaller but still can handle 4 people and actually looks like a mini golf cart. Can fit in the back of a pick up and takes up a lot less room. There ramps are great if you have short bed pick up as they are expandable and are light weight. This what I use only my cart is the sport model and made just for 2 people and all I need. I also ride around the neighborhood when not camping. Later RJD

Recommend DEKA batteries. I purchase blems for about a third of the cost of pretty ones! Lol

Do you have to get any type of insurance on the Cricket ? I just talked to my Insurance agent and she said I need to get a golf cart policy and the cheapest she could find is $163 a year since I would be adding it to my existing TT policy with Progressive.

This idea of tooling around my neighborhood on a golf cart is getting more $$$ by the minute I may have to re-think this great idea I have I may ended up just buying a new pair of Nikes and continue walking

You want electric for sure.

I'm in the market and I'm in NC as well. There's a guy in Denton that advertises on CL a lot. He has refurbished units with some customization and they usually run from 3-4k. When I get serious I'm going to ride down and take a look at his inventory.

Why do they say "Most only allow electric golf carts" ? I'm curious is why I ask. I haven't yet tried to take or use my gas cart to a campground, but I will eventually. Why the fuss over gas/electric? I've been to many campgrounds and seen both, no restrictions. Is it a western state thing?

Places like Ocean Lakes and Willow Tree at Myrtle Beach are fairly strict on electric only.

By the way. $4000 will get you a decent used cart. Most likely a private seller if you want something with a lift kit, etc.

They're all good brands but I prefer the Club Car Precedent. Its fairly fast stock and aluminum frame. That means no rust from trips to the beach.

Any idea why they restrict it to electric? I've never been a fan of Myrtle beach, so that wont be an issue for me.

My guess is noise. You'd think they wouldn't mind because gas doesn't cost them extra electricity since you'd be charging most nights at the campground.

This is ours at Fort Wilderness two years ago. Bought it for $5000 from a dealer in eastern NC.

No insurance required for this type cart. It's not considered a golf cart. Hopefully you will be able to check them out at my rally as I have contacted a dealer to display models. Later RJD

Insurance is recommended no matter the size of golf cart, you can still hit a child in a campground; The crickett is about 3/4 the size of a regular golf cart and only has 1 or 2 12 volt batteries, so won't run nearly as long as regular cart; I have gas and camp, and us it.. The campgrounds I asked at told me they specify electric only as a way to excluse 4 wheeler, 3 wheelers, SxS, etc. and that as long as it was a 'real' golf cart, no problem

And oh yeah, insurance thru State farm for lib. and theft only coust me $65/year here in La.

X2 on the Cricket. I have the SX3 version and it's great! Carries up to 4 people (depending on weight). It has 3 12volt batteries, a built in battery charger, and will go about 36hr between charges. Great around the campgrounds and neighborhood. It also breaks down/collapses enough to fit in the back of my Jeep Liberty. A new one will cost you around $4500 complete with canopy and ramps. I would definitely check it out.
