Shiny things will only deter the birds temporarily. Once they get used to seeing "shiny things" they will continue to nest there. I still say a 20 gauge.
By the way I love nature too. I enjoy watching and listening to woods come alive while sitting in a tree-stand during deer season. I enjoy watching the sun come up over a lake while sitting in my canoe fishing. But when nature starts destroying/damaging my property, I like to solve the problem quickly.
