Matching Cherry stain color as found in Rockwood/Flagstaff
Have a Rockwood 2306 and want to do some repairs and mods and need the best available CHERRY stain color to match what is used in Rockwood, or Flagstaff trailers. Hope to find something workable in Home Depot or Lowes. Anybody had any experience with this.
Also would like to find out what wood would be best match for replacement. Not talking about the wood on cabinet door or the Lauan that makes up the frame of cabinets, I am looking for the wood like is used on the trim below each bunk, or the top piece of the dinette seat, etc.
Thanks for any help.

Just read my post and I see that I didn't really ask the question properly. I am looking for the brand of cherry stain that best matches the original stain used in the trailers.
Thanks for any help.

I don't know about Rockwoods I just use a Minwood dark mahogany stain on our dark cherry cabinets in our Puma. If it is for a big area you might need to try a couple different colors as pints. If you are doing a mod then you will have to play with stains because your base wood will doubtfully match theirs. But if you have a dark cherry cabinet then I recommend trying a dark mahogany stain first........... Good Luck ......

We have a 2011 GreyWolf is Autumn Cherry. We had to have it custom made. It has a 2 step process first the toner then the color. Perfect match.

The trouble with matching stains is that the same stain will look different color on different woods so it can be a trial & error & mixing two different stains & trying it. A walnut stain (or any other color) will be different colors (shades) on white oak, red oak, poplar, cherry, pine etc. Then it also will depend on how smoothly sanded the wood was in the first place. So when doing a mod can be fun trying to get things to match exactly. As far as to brands they probably use a commercial stain that is not available on the retail market.

I have found that matching stain is tricky. The best advice is to take a piece of the wood that needs to be matched and the piece that has the final color on it to a paint store. They can take a base stain and add colors to it to match it. Different woods will take stains different ways so this will be a custom match. The paint store will do this for the price of the stain.

Thanks everyone. Ya, I worked with enough wood projects to know that stain is tricky and the type of wood maters too. That why I asked the smart experienced folks here. I think I'll try a premixed one or two from the commercial store and if no joy take a piece of wood to the paint store, like elinf said, and get them to match it.
Lots of help here. Thanes all!

I second what eland said. You can waste a lot of time, money, and material trying to match stain color and finish. I don't think it is worth it.
When I modded several items on my MiniLite, I took off a drawer front and took it and the wood I was going to use to the local Sherwin Williams store and told them I wanted to finish the bare wood to look as close as possible to the finished sample. The very next day I had a quart of stain (and advice on a finishing top coat) that is a PERFECT match. When people see the mods, everyone ... with NO exceptions ... has said they would never have known, that they look factory.

agree, I have used an industrial finishing place near me to custom mix stain to match existing customer woodwork before. they require piece of existing cabinet to match and a few pieces of the wood I'll be using for the project, sanded to the finished grit. Sometimes it's one coat application, sometimes it required toning and staining but it's always a great match. I did not know Sherwin Williams offered the service tho that is great info to know.

Sherwin Williams matched it for us and kept the formula on file if I need more later on.

With most stains you put them on let sit and wipe off so they stain evenly. The longer they stay on the darker they get. Minwax has a good selection of stain use the color chart to find the best match, Wood Stain Colors - Minwax Stain Colors & Wood Finish Guide | Minwax.

We took a piece of wood already colored to Ace hardware and had them match the color on their machine in paint not stain. I touched it up and made things and it matches perfectly.
