Math quiz!
Who can help me with calculating foot pounds of torque? Let's say I had a 175 lb human... How long of an extension bar would that human need on a wrench to achieve 250 ft lbs of torque?

If you had a 1 foot bar and you stood all your weight on the very end of the bar you would get 175 ft/lbs of torque.
So since you're needing 250 ft/lbs you'll need a bar 17-5/32" long. Keep in mind that you need to apply the weight at exactly that point to get the correct torque.

18" would be almost perfect. In my opinion it is a bad idea to ever place all your weight on a tool. I would try figure out how much you can pull or lift and go from there

Torque = F(orce) X L(ength)
In your example 250 = 175 X Length
250/175 = Length
1.4285 = Length
1.4285 X 1 foot = approximately 18 inches
Therefore, you would need an 18" bar, with 175 pounds of force applied at the end of it to tighten a nut to approximately 250 foot-pounds.

Or, for $9.99, you could get a torque wrench at Harbor Freight. (coupon valid until 4/1/19)

Remember that the force on the bar must be applied perpendicularly; in this case, the force (your weight) is only applied straight down, so it's only correct when the breaker bar is horizontal to the ground. As the bar rotates down from horizontal, the force from your weight is reduced against the bar. (Imagine if the bar were straight down, you couldn't apply ANY weight to it.)
In the pic, with F being your weight, Ftan only equals F when the bar is horizontal.

Yes, it was, but google Harbor Freight coupons and you can find current ones. They are always running sales like that. I just got my URGENT BLOWOUT SALE flyer from them in today's mail. That torque Wrench is in there, but not on sale...listed at $19.99 in this flyer.

or a 3 foot bar placed 180 degrees opposite from where the 175 lb person would stand on it and have him lift about 90 lbs.
the proper math question is "how much does a torque wrench cost"?

The $19.99 one only goes to 150 lb-ft. The OP needed 250 lb-ft. HF website only lists one that will do that, for $99.99.

Less than the Excedrine costs to get rid of the headaches from figuring the proper weight and length and increase/decrease in your weight....or finding a subject with the proper weight....and DW lying about hers.
I tried an 18” break over and broke almost every bolt I tightened. Apparently I weigh 4 or 500 lbs. [emoji24][emoji24]
