I BELIEVE the fan mate allows more air flow but hard to really tell.
I've had both but they were each used with different fans.

MaxAirII

I have the MaxAirII's. One used with Fantastic Fan and seems loud to me.

I just had the fantastic fan and matching fantastic vent cover installed this winter in our trailer. Impressions so far are good, but I've only fooled with it in the driveway so far. I had a MaxAir original cover on it with the old joke of a fan, which died and cost me $40 to replace (the motor) after about 6 trips. Will be selling the black maxxaire cover. Went with smoke this go round even though it cost more money, makes the bathroom a lot brighter!

They are also shaped a bit different so as to allow more air flow. Some will tell you that they restrict air too much for Fantastic Fans...your fans will still move more than enough air, even on a lower setting, not to worry.
The Hinge mount kit can be added to Any of the MaxAir Covers,Pull the R-Pins and Tilt to Clean! MaxAir covers have a Warranty also! Youroo!!

Oh...I did not realize that...good to know...I suppose by the time one buys the hinge kit, you may just as well well buy the MaxAire 11 that comes with the hinge and price may be close to the same.

I believe the new hinge install for the Maxxair I comes with the cover now. There is a kit for existing covers available (about $9).

Why not use the Fantastic cover? I put MaxxAir covers on the two bath fans and a Fantastic cover on that fan and you can hardly notice the difference. Looks great. Bought them at CW and they installed them for $14 each - no way was I getting on the roof at that price!

Here's a video that compares a few different vent covers.
Unfortunately it does not cover all that have been mentioned here.
The video is produced by Fan-Tastic so draw your own conclusions but it does contain some interesting points.
