Memory Foam Mattress Toppers

A question for those who have added a memory foam mattress topper to their mattress. Does the mattress heater still work well? Does it depend on the thickness of the foam topper?

funny you bring this up. We went camping this past weekend and it got cool the first night. I put the heater on the mattress on and had forgotten about it. The next night we went to bed and i happened to notice the light on the control was on and realized that i had left it on since the night before. It wasnt even noticable that it was on when we got in the bed. The only reason i had been putting off getting a mattress topper or just a whole new mattress was because i liked the idea of the heated mattress but if it's not working that well anyway, i might as well get a mattress that i can be comfortable on.
So, i believe the heated mattress is on it's way out the door.

My wife and I have unplugged the matress heater and put a memory foam topper on about 3 years ago in our previous TT. The first thing the DW did in the new TT was again, remove the heater cord and install the topper. She swears that It makes a big difference in her sleep. I dont notice anything (maybe the bottle of wine I have during the evening helps me sleep!) but to keep the peace, I let her add anything she wants to the bed. I say, if it keeps the wife happy, go for it!

eandsphotography, Don and Elaine, thanks for the feedback. I think we're going to try a 1 1/2" thick memory foam...perhaps its still thin enough that the heater may still work somewhat.

The memory foam topper was well worth the price after we put it on ours. We have never used the heated feature on ours so I can't say for sure whether it affects it or not, but most of our camping is done in warmer weather anyway so we don't bother with the heater. The mattress is much more comfortable with the foam topper. Just be sure to get a good one. Cheap ones are no better than the mattress itself.

Mine did. I got a rather thin one from Target, called a "Comfy Foam" for $19.95 The heater in my mattress gently warms the bed, it won't run you out from under the covers like an electric blanket. I/we like the set up we have now.

The one complaint I have about the heated mattress is the light in the control pod is so bright it lights up the entire bedroom!

Heat

Ours seemed to work a little.
I had it cranked up all the way. I'm sure it didn't hurt any.

Dave, we bought the 1 1/2 inch thick one from Sam's Club. It was kinda pricey. I don't
remember for sure but I'm thinking not too much south of $100 American.
We are much warmer than you folks but we do a little winter camping.
I can tell you that flannel sheets are a wonderful addition to the bedding in cold
weather!!!
We've never used our mattress heater so I can't tell you if it will get any heat thru the
memory foam.

We've bought an 1/2" thick memory foam from Wally Mart, the cost was $55 Cdn. I'll report back after our trip whether the mattress heater still works.

To update...
The mattress heater still works with the 1/2" thick memory foam although is doesn't seem to get quite as warm.
