Metal Trash cans

Hello has anyone had issues with animals eating trash outside of camper on campsite? im thinking about maybe trying to get a metal trash can that cant be knocked over and lid removed,, has anyone had this issue? what are yas using? thanks in advance

Everyday I put trash in the camp dumpster. Don't leave any thing like that outside the rv.

We never leave trash outside overnight. Really, not much ever.

Years ago while tent camping we had a cooler with buns in a screen tent. The screen tent didn't have a floor but was staked down without visible gaps around the bottom edge. The cooler was a new fangled plastic with a friction fit lid, there wasn't a clasp to secure the lid. During the night raccoons got in and opened the cooler with the buns and had a party. When we went to buy more buns we also bought bungee straps to secure the lid.
BTW, raccoons can open metal trash cans unless the lid fits tight enough you have problems getting it open or you strap it down.

Absolutely! Even if animals leave it alone insects won't.


Pay attention to the dumpsters at the campground when you pull in. If they are "Bear Proofed" that should be a clear message to heed.

West Yellowstone, MT, has the Grizzly and Wolf Center:

Besides being interesting, they are supposedly (so they said) the Bear Container Proving Grounds for any kind of trash can, bin, etc. to see if the manufacturer's claim of "Bear Proof" is valid.


They had an outside display of every type they'd tested. There were VERY few that survived. And they have plenty of captive bears to test them. Some of the ones that folks tout, and have great advertising, were torn to shreds.

We’ve used a small metal trash can for outside trash for years. I carry a 5 gallon bucket inside for recycling too. I use a small sturdy bungee to secure the lid. Never had a problem with any critters. Even in bear country.

They just featured this place on my local TV news the other night. It's amazing how clever the bears are, knowing just wear to crush to pop a lid, etc.

The TV report pointed out how the bears at this facility are bears that became nuisance bears in campgrounds etc and rather than relocating or euthanizing, let them enjoy themselves there. If the products they test survive, they get a special "Seal" to back up the mfr's claim.

BTW, that YETI cooler that costs so much and has the "bear tested certification sticker" is only bear-proof if you use padlocks to secure the lid. Bears have figured out how to just pull the rubber latches loose right off the bat.

Never leave trash outside your camper . always run to the dumpster .

We have bears here that open unlocked car doors! Was on the news.

If the trash bag is not full I will place trash can inside the back of my truck which is covered with a camper shell and I lock it too. If trash bag is full I take it to the camp dumpster before I turn in for the night.
