Miles a day when towing your RV

I am wondering how far most of us are towing our RV each day. Not a day when stopping and looking around. Just a normal day on the road with most highway driving. I am pulling a 6200 lb RV with my pickup, and trying to get an idea of distance I can expect going between 55-60 mph and driving for about 10 hours each day.

Thanks as always.

When we head out to Alberta, we usually take 7 days out and then 7 days back. We know where we're going to be at each day. We start out at 7 AM and usually finish around 1 or 2 PM depending on the miles between stops. We have put in some long days when we want to make up a day in order to stay at a campground, we like, for a couple of days, instead of one. Because we stop early in the day we don't make reservations and over the last decade or so of doing this we've not failed to get a spot. When we leave in the morning we're refreshed because it's not hurry up and make supper, go to bed and get up and go. So we travel approx. 275- 350 miles a day. I have a 50 gal aux fuel tank so we can go a long way without stopping. We know where the stations are that will accept our length and are easy to get in and out of. I don't unhook to get fuel and I don't unhook when at a campground for a night. Our 5er is 35 feet long and the TV is a dually

The most I've driven in one day is 500 miles. That was the first day on the way to Yellowstone. Second most is 400.

The longest we willingly travel per day is 8 hours which for us is around 400 miles. We stop about every 2 to 3 hours and usually go 65mph when towing.

If you are driving 55-60 MPH you will probably average 45 miles in an hour short gas and other breaks included.

We do not like going over 400 miles a day pulling a loaded trailer.

I have a firm rule that I simply won't violate. No more 800 miles in a day...period.

I did a search for "miles per day" and found this and others:

It has many answers to your question.

we've done 400 but like to keep it at 300. when planning I use 50 mph as an overall average for the day. this accounts for fuel and potty breaks (both for us and the pet). and no more than 2 straight travel days without a break. either an extra day at a park or a short driving day, maybe 100 miles. so I guess when you figure everything in you average 200 miles per day.

We like to keep ours at around 350 per day. always make reservations just in case we have issues. This way your not tired out completely and can relax before dinner. Later RJD

We did 630 miles in a day to and from Branson from Milwaukee. We were originally going to 2 day it on the way back, but our weather was so crappy when we got there, we figured we should take the extra day there. The drive down was rough...My wife didn't feel good, it poured cats and dogs around St. Louis and the baby developed a fever too. We had like 6 stops. It took 13.5 hours. The way home was super smooth....we stopped twice and made it home in under 12 hours.

From that experience, I would say 500 miles a day would be a max for me in the future. That last 100+ miles (2 hours) each way was brutal!

I tend to find that no matter how fast I go, once I factor in stops for fuel, stretching, and potty that I tend to have an overall traveling average of 40-45mph. To make the math simpler I round up to 50mph but know that I'll be slower than that.

So, 10 hours of driving = 500 miles using simple math.

We tend to travel 300 - 350 miles per day. We like to leave early in the morning 7 AM the latest and land somewhere by 4 PM. If we like where we landed we may unhook and stay a day or two. Retired and taking our time.

We've towed Louisville to Abilene KS in one day- twice.
678 miles.
More recently like last month... we towed Louisville to
Hot Springs AR 568
and
Hot Springs to San Antonio 562

I'm not afraid to keep up with the semi's.
We are comfortable at 68-70.

On our return trip we added a day and cut most drive days down to
a nicer 450-475 per day.

It depends on your comfort level and it's something you'll have to figure
out on your own.

We typically take the google estimate and add 1 1/2 hours and it's gonna
be pretty close for us. If it's a really long drive add 2 hrs. Shorter day maybe only 1 hour but 1.5 plus google time is pretty close.

For long trips, I typically do about 500 miles per day. For me, that includes stops for fuel and stretch breaks. It really depends on the roads, too. If traveling on interstate/freeway then I usually average about 60 mph with stops. If on smaller roads with small towns, that speed goes down to under 50. If I don't have anything else to do, then I don't mind driving 10-12 hours per day. Some of that depends on the length of daylight. If I can, I prefer to make it to the next campground before dark. Sometimes that means a shorter trip.

I pull a Windjammer 3001W (under 9000 lbs) with load range E tires using a Ram 3500 SRW with the 6.4L Hemi. That combination means that I can pull the trailer at 70 mph when conditions allow it. Running an extra 10 mph makes a difference for a 10 or 12 hour day!

Looking at our spreadsheet we have been keeping for our journey the longest drive so far was 728 miles but our average for 8 months, 40 drives has been 280 miles. I barely remember the long drive but it was not a big deal, just had to setup after dark which I don't like to do. I think because we take breaks every couple of hours it wasn't that tiring, (2 kids and a dog). It did take about 15 hours total and we pulled into the RV park around 11pm. If I didn't get a good nights sleep the night before I would not do it, we would have just pulled off when I got tired. One cool thing we have found about not reserving ahead of time for the drive, there has always been some RV park available when we call ~3pm in the afternoon to reserve a spot that evening. Also since our tire blowout last year, I have been driving around 60mph so that long drive was doing around 60mph. Having written all that, it is nice to do less than 300 miles and be all setup and relaxing by mid afternoon.

At the end of the day I seem to average 50-55 MPH,, even though i travel at around 65-68 MPH. Cant really say miles per day,, its more about hours per day for me . after about 7 hours it starts to take the fun out of it,, even though we road warrior it a few days here and there just to keep on track. But it seems like stopping to get fuel just seem to take longer when pulling the camper,,Wife has to look around a little bit,, etc,,,So when i am calculating how long it will take me to go say 1000 miles I use 55 mph for an accurate ETA.
But thats just me./us.

We pull a 36' Cardinal. I try to keep distance between 250 and 350 miles, 5 to 6 hours. If its an interesting area its more like 150 to 250 miles.

I almost never look for miles per day when I start off.
I go by hours. I keep it to 8 hours max, and prefer 6 total, so that gives me some daylight at the end of the day to set up. I also use my fuel gauge: 1/2 tank top-offs, since on my winter/summer route, I have it memorized where I want to fuel up. I use "gas buddy" to fine tune that. Another distance marker I sometimes use is military bases, since I can camp there. So, no farther than one base to the next, unless there is a trusted Walmart Stop in
between.
If I am really set on making miles per day, I don't tow the RV. High speed, low profile thunder runs are for the car.

I generally go by time rather than miles. I(my wife) try's to limit it to 5-6 hours of driving per day maximum. That works out to about 325 miles a day towing a 32' fiver. I used to drive OTR so I'm used to going 600+ miles a day and wouldn't have an issue doing that now. Really depends on the area and if we have places to be by a certain time.
