Moisture

My camper sits out all winter. I live in pa so the winters are up and down in temp. Is it a good idea to put charcoal in a bucket to help with moisture?

Camping World sells a product called Dri-Z-Air that I have used the past few years. It collects water, but I don't know if it collects enough to do a lot of good. It's not very expensive so I'll continue to use it. Don't know about the bucket of charcoal but it won't hurt. I might try the bucket of charcoal along with the Dri-Z-Air. Good Luck.

You can do that or use Damp Rid or if you have power to the camper you could buy something like these.

Thank you. This is our first camper. It's a gray wolf bh26. So I'm learning as we go.

I second, Damp Rid, you can buy it at pretty much any retailer and it works well. We also live in PA so I know what you are saying on the up and down temps, especially the last few winters. Welcome to the forum and happy camping! (Next season)

Thank you. We are north of Pittsburgh. We just upgraded from tents to the gray wolf bh26. We love it.

Another user of Dri-Z-Air. Temperatures during our five plus months of winter can range to slightly above freezing to -40 and below. Product works as advertised in keeping the humidity down. Most major hardware stores and Wallyworld carry it.

Both Dri-Z-Air and Damp Rid are pellets of calcium chloride and probably work in the same manner. In the future I'll purchase the one that is the best value for my money.

I use damp rid, I found it to be cheaper then dri-z-air. Also when it is full you just throw the whole bucket out. Menards usually has it on sale for $7 and wal marts regular price is around $10.

I got a 4# tub of DR at WM for $10, cheap enough for me.

You can buy calcium chloride in 50# for $17.87 at Home Depot and put in in small individual containers and set it out in several locations in the camper.

I hope this question goes in the right place. I have three or four of those driz-z-aire things in my 33 ft fifth wheel. Should I still keep the roof vents open (just a crack)? It doesn't seem logical to try to remove moisture from winter air continuously circulating thru trailer. Should I close those vents and use the driers, or crack the vents and forget about the driers?

We employ four of the "driers" throughout the TT, which is sealed up tight. "Sealed up tight" is probably disingenuous because RV's are nowhere near what a R-2000 or high efficiency home might exhibit re air infiltration. I would suggest that there's more than enough air leakage through your RV so as to preclude having to crack any of the vents. Even so, we usually have a peek inside every three or so weeks, especially if we've been having some wild temperature swings.

We live too close to the coast to not have a dehumidifier. We keep it plugged in and running all the time.

Charcoal is used for adsorption of odors and some chemicals but I don't think it would do much for moisture.

IMHO. Charcoal is not sealed when you purchase it, therefore if you don't dehydrate it before you use it, I wouldn't think it would help much. My .02

moisture ventilation mold winterization storage

DRI-Z-AIR® DEHUMIDIFIER - MOISTURE ABSORBER - MADE IN THE USA and Damp Rid is made in china . I buy American whenever I can.

This site from the EPA explains Moisture and Mold Prevention and Control Tips. Control moisture (humidity), good ventilation (air movement) and light.

I use Dri-Z-Air year round; in the summer I slightly open the vents; in the winter I leave the vents closed and leave all inside doors open to allow free air flow.

Use the air driers in between times that you can open up the rig and let the humid, stale air out. Wait for a lo humidity day (we even get them in FL) and open up the rig, run the exhaust fan(s) for 20-30 min with a door or windows open (lube the seals while this is happening) and then close it all backup. Works well for us and there is no stale, humid/damp areas inside.

I checked the tub of Damp Rid on the kitchen counter a week ago when it was fairly cold here water was not frozen about 1/8th of a cup I would guess.
This is the first time I have use this stuff, I may or may not try something else later this year.

I like to try different stuff rather than getting stuck in a rut with the same-o lame-o.
