mosquito control

Help...has anyone found anything that stops these critters from attack? We were out for the holiday weekend and my grandson got so many bites that it was unreal,,we tried the sportsmans off with 29% deet, avon, skin so soft and a coleman brand of bug spray and still received all those bites. I was wondering if some of you veteran campers have found another remedy..We are in an area that has alot of water and woods, and the wet spell sure hasnt helped things..If there is anything else I could try, I will be happy to try...thanks

I recently read about using Listerine in a spray bottle and spray the area where you will be. I will be trying this remedy for the first time this coming weekend.

i have heard about using listerine as a mosquito control. unfortunately, the small amounts of menthol and eucalyptus in the solution most likely will provide some repellency, but it will probably be fairly short-term. the alcohol in the product will most likely kill them if sprayed directly on them, but you don't notice the bite until its done.i have also seen garlic solutions that are sprayed on an area as a repellant.
we have a seasonal site in Chincoteague,Va,(the mosquito capitol) and have found that any repellant with "picaridin" in it works well. unlike "deet" it is safe for children when used as directed. if we are outside for any length of time we reapply it after 3 or 4 hrs.

I use the Repel with 40% deet, it seems to work and we use citronella candles. if they are really bad I will spray around the area with an outdoor fogger. I have found that if I take a benadryl before bed most of the bites will go away when I get up. My wife rarely gets attacked.

You should have been ---------

You think your Mosquitoes are bad, You should have been with us in Tampa, Fl at the Mac Dill air force base for the last 10 days. They were so bad we cut our stay short by 2 days. You go out side and your arms, legs, ears turn black with mosquitoes. Then when you go back inside, you take them with you.

There is some thing called a bite stick and you can get it at wall greens and you put it on the Miskito bites and it stings for a min but it makes them stop icing

Definitely recommend the Thermocell if you are staying in an area. They do work.

If you cover yourself with Listerine at least you will taste good when they bite.

Thermocell

Thermocell works great if the wind is not to strong. Best thing to try is a good fan blowing into the area you are sitting. This will keep them off of you. They do make stuff with 100% DEET but it is strong.

Just watch out what that strong stuff spills on. When I was a kid, we accidentally spilled some on the floor of the tent - and it melted right through.

And we put it on our skin...

Deet will also "melt" anything plastic - fishing pole handle, etc. Make sure you wash your hands thoroughly and don't sit in a plastic chair or the slimy stuff will get on the chair and either melt it or leave marks you won't be able to remove.

I use Sawyer insect repellent for clothes. Its main ingredient is Permethrin. It is NOT for spraying on your body. It is for spraying on your clothes. I do a lot of fishing and find this product works very well. You spray it on your clothes and let it dry. It generally lasts me for the whole summer. The down side is if you have a lot of exposed skin, like when wearing shorts and short sleeve shirts those parts of your body are at risk for bites. You will need to look around for it. I found it at Dick's Sporting Good.

We live on the coast in South Texas and when outside just about anytime of the year we have mosquitos, we use an Off product, looks like a small lantern, and you buy "pads" that go inside of it and it will keep them 10' + away from you.
I have also read that a "dryer" sheet stuffed in a pocket will help. I spray my yard at least once a month with a product that attaches to a garden hose, very effective if you are going to be outside for any length of time. It last several weeks and cost about $10. I know the next one at your camp site will appreciate it also. It is good for mosquitos, flies, fleas, ticks etc.... .
