Mt. St. Helens acting up again.
The mountain is acting up again. Warnings this morning for aircraft for ash drifting to the northwest. Hopefully it will calm down and the winds don't change or it could put a kink in our plans for camping this next week as we wont be too far from it.

Yes, the Cascade Range is very active. Mt Hood has had several earthquakes also. Mt. Rainer is the one to keep an eye on. The USGS and Forest Service sites for Mt. St. Helens are showing normal (green). My daughter is running around in the area today so I am expecting a report later. Although the dome was not visible when we were there last week here is a picture I took in 2007.

Dodgeman, the area in the 1st pic you posted, was it covered w/ ash when the volcano erupted years ago?
In British Columbia there in a lava field north of Terrace. The volcano there erupted back in the 1700s. I've been thru it twice. The 1st time was in '99 & had never heard of it before had it not been for a local girl telling us about it when we were passing thru.

We flew over MSH in 1980 shortly after it blew and right after they opend up the flight restrictions near the mountain. The shear enormity of the destruction can never be understood in mere pictures. To see it first hand was truely amazing. I still remember going fising in eastern Washington with my dad and the ash was several inches thick. It was like talcum powder and would infiltrate any crack or hole with ease. The camper was full of it and so was our sleeping bags. To this day I hate having dust or dirt in the RV becase of the memories of sleaping in an ash filled sleaping bag. In many areas over there even now, a hundred miles from the mountain that ash is just under the surface and can be stirred up easily.

I climbed it before it blew and have seen it several times since. I am glad I got to the top before it went away altogether.

Revrnd, That photo was taken at the Johnston Ridge Observatory which was in the blast zone. That is the Toutle River Valley in the background. That is where most of the mountain top went. It is reported to be from up to 600 feet of ash filing the valley. That is the new Toutle River winding its way through the ash.
NWjeeper, You are so right. You had to be there. I was not able to get back to the Mountain until 1983. Even then, although some of the recovery logging had started, it was amazing. We drove up the Toutle River as far as you could go back then and then went to Windy Ridge. I still stand in awe of the power from the eruption.
I hope your trip pans out for you. I envy you as I would love to be camping in the PNW. Hopefully next spring.
Pondlady, I envy you being able to spend so much time on the Mountain.

52D, I am a mountain person and have climbed many of them in many states and countries. The pic under my name is me about 7000' up Rainier - just for a walk. The climb was years before this photo.
How could we live without mountains?
