Unhappy Must be going soft - cancelled camping trip

For the first time in 30+ years of camping I cancelled a trip today...due to wind! We have sustained winds of 30 mph and gusts to 40 mph. Wife and I went to hookup the TT in the storage lot and I could hardly get the gate open against the wind. I decided it wasn't worth towing a 35' sail on the highway. Waiting for CG manager to call me back to see if I can reschedule.

Good decision, not worth the anxiety. Better days are ahead.

I think that's pretty smart. We had a lot of wind on our trip back on TN and it was a bit unsettling. Good luck on the re-schedule!

Big thanks to Drummer Boy campground in Gettysburg for allowing us to move our trip out 2 weeks!

Not sure what you mean by going soft. Is it because you camp in a campground? Not towing in heavy winds is wisdom and not "softness". We have tractor trailer's flip on their sides here quite regularly and they weigh a bit more than our RV campers.

Come West and we'll tow your camper over the Continental Divide on a narrow switchback dirt road to some of the most beautiful boondock camping areas you can't even imagine. Give yourself an extra day for the trip so I can install a lift kit onto your camper.

I'd only tow in heavy winds if I needed a new camper or wife-both of which are highly insured.

TonyD, maybe I should have said wiser. Many years ago I would have hooked up and driven through a hurricane. Smarter now. [emoji2]

Many of our favorite campsites require crossing Chesapeake Bay Bridge. High wind closings have kept us home and at the campground several times for a day or so. Not fun towing in high winds. Good decision.

Smart move! My wife and I went on our first trip on Easter Weekend. No rain but some significant cold weather and wind. The water supply briefly froze in the am the morning we were leaving. And we also ran out of propane for the furnace. at about 3am. Thank goodness for the electric fireplace and some small electric space heaters that I keep in the cabinets if needed. They were needed! But as everyone says, better weather just around the corner!

We spent two days in camp grounds in New Mexico the 22nd and 23rd because of winds of 35 to 45 mph i think the gust were much higher. We saw two TT off the road and guy at the KOA said that in Gallup a TT pulled over to the side the road and turned over while he was stopped. There was times we were down to 45 mph trying to find a camp grounds. The news was showing houses with tumble weed covering the entire house and there was solid stream of them blowing across the road. Just not worth taking that kind of risk.

Smart, I don't care what anyone says. This has to be the weirdest weather that I can remember. You can blame El-nino or a warming climate or anything people can think of, but if your smart you try to avoid these problems. Pretty soon we all need weather fax's from NOAH so we can go camping, I do not believe what any weather person predicts any more... Stay safe and alive..

Did you look what's coming up the coast April 1 - 5? Good time to figure how to anchor your (my) 5r down. Somewhere I thought I saw a manufacture had included storm straps for anchoring. Retired don't hafta be anywhere on time (except when she who has to be obeyed).

We have delayed trips a day or so due to the threat of weather. You made the right choice....its the 1st of April. Plenty of camping left this season.

I also agree that it was a smart choice. My maiden voyage was delayed to high winds with 60+ mph gusts. Since then I have cancelled a few other trips due to high wind.

Won't get any grief from me!

I was a dedicated tent camper for years. Only canceled one canoe trip due to a late season ice storm rolling in... my daughter won't let me forget it either...20 years later! We camp to enjoy ourselves not battle the weather. Discretion is the better part of valor. Being holed up in the camper for an entire weekend because of crappy weather is not my idea of fun.

All very wise decisions. There is just no way to predict what a gust of wind or a passing truck will do to you.

Las Cruces, I question for you speaking of weather. Was this a normal winter down there, we changed from going down there and to florida instead, but even Florida had very weird weather this year, and I was even as far south as Miami, seemed like the weather break line was Palm Beach....

Good choice! We camp for outdoor experience, not the white knuckles.

Horrible decision to stay home. You simply point the rig the direction the wind is blowing and head that way. Get the DW on the phone looking up campsites that are that direction as you travel. You'll get the best fuel mileage you've ever gotten while towing. You can then post that on all forums you are active in and pretend that's normal for your TV.
