what year is my sunseeker?

I bought a so called 2013 Forest River Sun Seeker 3010DS, the Vin number indicates a 2012. So which is it? 2012 or 2013?

It was probably a model year 2013 manufactured in 2012.

The problem is I bought a 2013, but the motor vehicle department in NY state indicates it is 2012. My contract stated 2013....Which one is right. I assumed it had 3 more years on the factory warranty. Or am I going to loose a year? So confusing......

Look at the VIN on your title or frame. The tenth digit is the code for the year.

It goes thru a repeating pattern of letters , then numbers.

Here is a link, although it's for automobiles, RV's use the same date codes.

http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Vehicle...%29/Model_year

2013 is a D
2012 is a C

If you bought new, wouldn't your factory warranty run from date of purchase, making the year of the unit irrelevant?

By 3 year warranty I'm assuming your talking about the chassis warranty.
If so as vern said it goes by date of purchase not year made.
For example we bought a brand new truck crane in 2003 from manitowoc.
The "crane portion " was a 2003 the truck cab and chassis was 2001 but they listed the unit as 2003.
The warranty started in 03 even tho the truck was an 01

This is a common question and a common issue in the RV industry.

The model year of your RV is determined by the "completed unit" model year. The RV manufacturer -- Forest River or anyone else -- buys Class A and Class C chassis from Freightliner, Chevy, Ford, Mercedes, or someone else and has to order and stock them in advance. The chassis might be a 2014 model, but the RV is then built on it after the RV model year has switched over to 2015, and the unit has whatever new features the RV manufacturer has introduced for the 2015 model year.

The RV manufacturer designates the model year of the completed model year, and your unit is a 2015 RV.

In any event, though, the warranty kicks in on the date that the unit is sold to the retail purchaser, so your warranty period starts from that date.

Hope this helps.

However, if you're buying "auto parts" for the engine and chassis, make sure to get the ones for the chassis model year.

To make the model year issue even more complicated, FR has been known to do mid-year revisions to trim and features on some units. For example, my 2010 Rockwood Roo 23SS was an early 2010 model. Midway through the model year, they switched from white exterior trim and interior switch/outlet covers, to black. A more recent example is 2015 Rockwood Ultra Lite's switched from a front luan wall with diamond plate to a molded front cap.

The factory does not offer a 3 year warranty so you must be talking about either an aftermarket warranty or a component warranty.

As others have said, the factory 1 year warranty for the entire unit and the longer manufacturer warranty on certain components like frames and appliances, starts on the date of retail purchase. For an aftermarket extended warranty on the entire RV, you'll have to read the fine print on your warranty to find out when it starts and what is covered for how long.

If you are 'lucky' enough to be registered in a state that requires emission inspections, you won't want them inspecting for 2015 requirements as your older chassis will almost certainly fail.

Likely answer...

On a MH the coach and the chassis are two separate things that come together at the plant. It is likely the plant was still using the remaining 2012 chassis (which carries the vin number) on a 2013 coach (which carries the MH model year). This is very common because when the manufacturer decides to quit a model year production to switch over to the next, there are usually many prior year chassis not yet used. I will likely see that on the unit I have on order.
