Need Advice - Musty Smell
Looking at the next step up from my Coachmen Clipper 17BH, which we have enjoyed for two summers. Considering Keystone Bullet 243BH (I know, Thor, but I value your opinions) Currently my dealer has a NEW 2017 that hasn't sold but it has a musty smell just as you walk in the door. Can get a 2018, but the $7k price difference is attractive. When I looked at it, the door had been open all day. Asked them to close it up for the weekend and I'd come back. They offered to put heaters in for a couple of days, but I said wait because I wanted to see how bad it was after being closed up. My questions are: what could cause the musty smell...we checked everywhere for leaks and found nothing. However, the dealer leaves doors on the lot open all day and it could have rained in. Should I ask them to look under the floor boards just as you walk in? Also, can you ever get rid of a musty smell? If so, how? OR...the biggie here...should I just forget it and shell out the $7k for a 2018 and not have to worry about it?

If it was me, I'd go for the 2018, but work very hard at negotiating that $7K difference down to at least half that amount. I'd be afraid of a unit that had a musty smell in it. There are so many places that could have gotten wet by leaks, rain blowing in, someone spilling something inside (and it ran under carpet where it couldn't be cleaned up). Just too many variables for me, especially with the money being spent.

Thanks folks. Exactly what I was thinking. Went in several new units and none of them smelled at all musty. Don't know how much more they will go down on the 2018 as their ask was much higher than the $7k difference and they came down to match the lowest price that I found elsewhere in New England. As they should. Waiting to see how much they will give me for my Clipper, that might be a game changer. Don't mind driving a few hundred miles to save thousands.

We bought a new Cedar Creek that had been sitting on the lot several years ago. I always noticed a musty smell in the cabinets above the dining table. Never did get rid of the smell and ended up trading it in. Close the door and don't look back!

I learned the hard way, I bought a "last one on the lot" deal, I found out why it was the last one on the lot and a model carry over, the floor was warped so bad and I found the slide adjustments were not even tight so someone new about it. My fault for not catching it during the PDI, the manufacturer fixed it some what but you can still feel the floor. Never again will I buy a year end/carry over model. I would run and not look back, they don't smell moldy or mildew for no reason.

We purchased a new year old RV. It went through a lot of weather while sitting.
It smelled new and still had the new smell 2 years later. Musty generally means mold and that is something you don't want to be breathing.

Exactly what I was gonna say. My 2015 17bh sat on the lot for a few months and smelled like new. 3 summers later, it still does.
I would run away!

I heartily agree that musty smell can be mold! You DO NOT want that!
