Need help with speed
I have always like to get between point a and b in a reasonable quick amount of time. I normally drive about 70-75 on the freeway. I understand that while I'm am pulling my TT, although it is possible, it is not safe. I have been trying to limit myself to 55 while towing the TT, but it is hard. My question is simply, can I use the cruise control and is 60 - 65 too fast.
Thanks,
Randy

Set my cruise at 62-63mph and sit back and enjoy the ride!

I do what you asked- cruise control set to 63.
Cruise control is the only way I can go that slow.

60 is the speed the fuel sippers on here like. I would imagine with the trailer it'd be the same. MPO, is that if your rig is set up correctly, 60 should be a very safe speed. With my 2010 F150, 60 keeps me below the magic 2k rpms. Above 2 thousand, is where the mileage suffers.

Most long haul truckers are governed at 68mph. I try to run in that range out on the Interstate. Secondary roads are run at a speed that I feel comfortable doing.

Yeah, I agree, I wish I could do 60 for better fuel mileage but I gotta bump it up a couple of MPH to stay chugging along at 1,600 rpm or run it in 5th gear. I like 6th and engine at peak torque rpm.

I run 68 on cruise. Fluctuates a mph or two. Most trailer tires are rated at 65mph max but I like to push it a little.
I still feel like I'm standing still.

Most manuals tell you to go about 10 mph less the the maximum speed for the road. Not sure how that helps. So you should tow the trailer at what the speed ratings are on the tires. Most travel trailer tires max speed is 65 mph (104 kph). So traveling at 70 to 75 will exceed the speed limit for the travel trailer tires.
I believe there are only a few manufacturers of travel trailer tires that will go up to 75 mph (121 kph).
Check the speed rating on the tires. Even though the speed rating may be as high as 75 mph (121 kph) it may not be safe to do so if the trailer is bouncing all around behind you.
I think it is safe to limit your speed to 60 mph (100kph) and you will be safe. Also consider the load of the trailer when you make your decision on speed.

I admit, I do not enjoy long car trips, driving or riding. Anything over 2 hours and I'm asking if we're there yet. My in-laws live 4 hours away. Love to visit, but that 4-5 hours (bathroom and meal breaks-I have young kids) taken out of the day just annoys me to no end.
NOW... We're getting ready to haul the trailer from Indy to Disney/Fort Wilderness. I'm excited to stay in our trailer at FW, and to spend time together at Disney. But I loath that drive down. I loathed it as a kid when going to Florida with my folks.
And yes, speed is capped at 65mph. Coming from a guy that normally drives 70-75mph.
The vast majority of our trips are 2 hours, little further for Spring Mill and Holiday World.
But I value safety, and 65 will be my max speed. Even if tires are rated for faster, I don't believe it's safe to tow above 65.

Many trailer tires are rated for a max of 65 MPH, my 2012 V-Cross 275 fiver tires are rated for 65 MPH and I don't exceed that limit.

Every day I go speed limit plus 10-15 just about everywhere (except in school zones, etc) so when I get in the tow vehicle I just relax. I will set the cruise to the local limit and just plan on getting there when I do. Part of the joy of travelling is the journey.

I checked my tires everytime I stopped. About every 2 hours. Truck and trailer. Everything ran about 100 degrees on non sun side and 110 on the sun side. I don't have a tpms so I used my laser temp gun. Goodluck

I will not tell you what I run without the FW in tow. LOL!!! But when pulling the FW, I run the posted speed limit and/or a max speed of 65. I like to use the cruise too. You also have to consider the danger of going too slow when on the interstate. On the interstate I always run the max 65mph so that I'm not a road hazard running down the road way slower than everyone else. I've passed some of my fellow RVers running 55mph on an interstate that has a speed limit of 70mph. They had new equipment, TV and FW, running 55mph with people actually slamming on the brakes as they ran up behind someone running 55 on the 70mph interstate. So, too slow and cautious can be just as hazardous as going too fast. IMO

IMO, if people are slamming on their brakes, they must have been dozing, daydreaming, texting, etc. as an rv is not something that is not easy to see from quite a distance away. I will continue to run 55-65 on interstates regardless of the other traffic going 70-90 or whatever. Guess who gets ticketed if I get hit from the rear while traveling 55-65? May tear up the camper, but that's what insurance is for. Hopefully no one in my vehicle gets hurt. JMO

In my limited experience so far, it has been 60-65 for me. I plan to keep it that way. My only speeding tix were back when I was in college. When I started a family everything changed.

I govern my speed by the tire ratings on what I'm towing...mine are ST's and max 65mph...so I typically run 62-65mph and the Duramax hums along at 1800rpm

I have no issue when people with trailers, travel at the posted limit or even below but I wanted to share a story from a few weeks back. I was traveling on a two lane highway towing nothing. Many vehicles ahead of me was a huge 5th wheel / pick-up truck combination. The road was busy and slightly curvy with few passing opportunities. In these sections of the highway, we were going 50 mph in a posted 55. Occasionally, there would be sections of highway that would change into a two way, four lane divided highway. The guy with the 5th wheel would then speed up to 70+ in these sections (still 55 mph) making it very difficult for the long line of cars to pass. Once we left the section of road with passing opportunities, we would go back to 50mph. It would have been nice if this person had committed to their 50mph speed in the areas where it was safe to pass. At least commit to the lower speed in passing areas long enough for others being held up to get past. I never got close enough to pass this person, eventually we went in different directions.
