This is almost as good as the hoax that was going around in the 70s (for us old geezers who remember them). When gas first went over $1/gallon (oh, those were the days!) many stations charged by the half-gallon, and some got on the metric bandwagon what was starting to roll a little bit. There were some folks who offered, for a fee, to recalibrate your gas gauge to metric so that it would work with liters of gas in your tank, rather than with gallons.

P.T. Barnum would have been proud.

But good advice in the article to hang up the pump when it clicks off. Don't keep trying to get more gas in as it may harm the evaporative collection system.

I saw the half gallon deal, guy that ran the station said the older machine/pumps could not go over 99.9 cents....

Actually, the half-dollar pricing is the part that was legitimate, and for the reason given. Who in the world would have ever thought when they made those old mechanical pumps that gas would hit $1.00 per gallon?

But the "recalibrate your gauge from gallons to liters" was pure evil genius.

In 1976 we took my two weeks of vacation and two weeks leave without pay to make the Grand Tour of the western national parks. We were in my '74 Hornet hatchback (304 V-8) which I still have, and my ragged but cheap and lightweight '65 Apache tent camper, which is long gone.

Gas was mostly between $0.55 and $0.65 per gallon. Somewhere in south Texas a small gas station had it for $0.499. I stopped and filled up even though it only took about 5 gallons because I figured it would be the last time I would buy gas for less than $0.50. And it was!

Still it was some money to fill up even at 10-15 buck a fill up I was making around 2.35 an hour the job before that was 1.65.

Lots of people would put in 2-3 bucks worth because they did not have the time or money to fill it up.
