Probably will take a couple of hours of running to get rid of the "new' smell.

I got that the first time too. The smoke alarm startled me pretty good. Ours has a couple hours on it now (actual burn time) and its getting better. I disconnected the smoke alarm last time we used it as it was morning and we only needed it while we were up and were having our coffee. Put the smoke alarm battery back in after shutting the furnace off.
