New York State Parks discrimination Policy

Nice to see The New York State Park system has brought in a discrimination policy and now charges $5.00 extra per night for out of state campers.
Obviously they don't care for visitors or are trying to keep us out.
Perhaps the restaurants, liquor stores, toll booths, department stores etc could follow their lead.

I feel your pain but try to understand the policy.
Kentucky does not (yet) charge for entrance into a state park.
Campground fees are the same for residents and out of state visitors but.....
I know the state parks (and national parks) are struggling to make
ends meet. State revenue is down, politicians are fond of talking about
how much they support parks but routinely yank money OUT of the
park budgets any time they do any belt tightening.
We had a wonderful little RV campground in one of our parks called
Pine Mountain state park in south east Kentucky. The state closed
that camp ground several years ago without warning. I am just thankful they haven't closed more of them.

I'm not sure of the wisdom in charging a higher fee to visitors but
New York is not alone in doing this.
Indiana charges a day use fee to most of their state parks and residents get a discount vs out of state visitors.
It does seem a bit counter intuitive-- if they are trying to promote
tourism that is.....

you can discriminate back stay in a private campground
we ran into the same problem in mi $5.00 per day extra for both the toad and mh
and i own property in mi they said it goes by the vehicle registrastion
so we spent 30 days in mi and not 1 night in a state campground

Perhaps their thinking is that most of the park's budget is supported by state tax dollars and out of state folks haven't contributed to that. I'm not agreeing with it... just guessing about their motive in doing it.

I don't know if Texas parks charge a different free for out of state visitors. I do know it is difficult to get into some Texas parks after new years due to the large number of snow birds. Goose Island at Rockport on the gulf coast is one of them. I have seen license plates from every northern state including Alaska and Canada. However that being said out of state visitors do contribute to the states economy and do pay the state sales tax on everthing the buy and those taxes help support the state park system. I plan this July to be a summer bird and spend 6 weeks in and around Banff Canada and I will cheerfully do my part to support the Canadian economy.

Please remit out of province surcharge to me as there are no out of province charges that I know of. $4.00 per day will suit me fine

In Montana, if you have a MT license plate, you get in for "free" to state parks (you still have to pay for overnight camping, etc.).

Now, here is the "free" part. Each year as part of vehicle registration, we pay $4/vehicle as a state park fee...

Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks :: Entrance Fees

So, I pay an entrance fee as a resident even if I never use the vehicle to go into a park.

Unless we are traveling on a holiday weekend or trying to get into one of the very special parks I am amazed at how empty the state parks are. Five of the last six summers we have traveled in the US and with very few exceptions could have done so without reservations. Seems to me they should be doing something else other than raising the prices to encourage more visitors.

Not uncommon here, either. We have a city owned campground, Hanna Park, that has a 10% discount for Duval County (Jacksonville) residents. I also know Orlando Fl. charges "entertainment" tax, and the state charges Bed tax, even at campgrounds which really makes my skin crawl, because IT'S MY BED in my camper that theyr'e taxing me for!!! Plenty of examples around of state laws that favor local interests over out-of-state interests. Frankly, its smart policy as the money is needed. Here in WI it can be very difficult to get in to some parks (Peninsula, for example) and I doubt that a fee increase would really deter out-of-state campers.

I know it's hard for us locals in Florida to get into our own State Parks, because of the Reserve America system. Most of the time, IF your'e lucky enough to get in, while there you see empty sites are all over the place! I realize it's because of no-shows, but there should be a way to fill these spots up for the weekend! Randy

Travelers and vacationers spend lots of money where ever they go. Many states spend a lot of money attracting visitors. I think Mc Donalds should start checking license plates at the drive through and charge more for out of state cars.

Here in NY we pay very high taxes and when the revenues dry up as they have in the last two years, the state looks to increasing revenue or decreasing services and one of the first areas to get hacked is state parks. I think $5 is hardly an excessive fee for a state park. When I go to any other state or city I'm paying separate bed taxes, occupancy taxes, or any other tax that they can dream up for visitors to their cities/states/provinces who stay in their hotels. Why should campgrounds be any different?

I agree $5.00 is not a lot considering how reasonable the camping fees are at the NY State parks but why not raise them for everyone if they realy need more money? The fee is still much lower than we pay in Ontario. I am always amazed at all the grass cutting they do compared to our Prov. parks which are left in their natural state.

I realize this was a rhetorical question but here's my guess--
They didn't raise the fee to in state folks because the
out of state folks can't vote them out of office!
