Newbie camper selection and towing question

Hello all,
I am new to the RV thing and am in the process of making a purchase. I am between the Keystone Bullet Premier 31bhpr , Coachmen 320bhds Freedom Express Liberty Ed., and the 292 Freedom Express Liberty Ed.

My wife and I love the 320 Freedom Express but I am concerned about its weight. I have a 2015 F150 3.5 Ecoboost with a 5.5 bed. My tow rating is 10700 and my payload is 1710lbs. Does anyone have experience towing a 320 freedom express? I wouldn't care if we were going camping close but we're going to be doing some 1k mile trips with it.

Our contenders the 292 and Bullet are both roughly 1300-1500 lbs less than the 320. Which is making me lean towards one of them, paticularly the 292. The only things well lose is the island. Kitchen slide, and bunk room slide, and larger attached shower. That sounds like a lot on paper though lol.

Thanks for the input.

Just my opinion but your truck should "handle" it. I doubt you will exceed the 10700 towing capacity but you will likely have about 1000# tongue weight which only leaves you about 700# payload for you, your family, furry kids and all the other stuff you put in the truck.

One other thing, with 37 feet on a 1/2 ton you may be more susceptible to sway so make sure you have a good weight distrbiuting hitch such as the Equalizer 4 point or similar. You will run slow going up the mountains but if you drive conservatively like around 55-60 you should do OK.

Buy the floor plan that will best suit your needs. Worst case scenario is you will need to by a heavier truck.

I believe that the 320 is too much trailer for a 1/2 ton. Yes, the truck will pull it but it wouldn't like it.

I towed my Freedom Express 248RBS Max 8500Lbs with an 05 Silverado 2500HD 6.0. Towed well on flat, but up an down hills towed it but very noticable. The 320 is another 2000lbs and your truck is 1/2 ton. It will pull it but I do not think you will be enjoy the ride. I do not think you will be happy with this combination.

Just to expand on my prior comment. My wife and I purchased our 30ft TT April of 2010. We had a 2001 dodge ram 1/2 ton with 5.9 liter gas engine. The trailer weighs 6960 empty and 11,150 max. Before we bought the trailer we did a trial run and I knew I had a lot of weight behind me but it seemed doable. We made a few trips up here in northern MN of 100 miles or less and it was ok, except if I wanted to pass someone I needed a looong run to do it-especially if there was any head wind. We went to the Black Hills that august and then I realized I didn't have enough truck. Having to hold the gas pedal to the floor and loosing speed up long hills wasn't fun.
I came across a 2003 gmc sierra with 8.1 liter and Allison transmission and bought it. What a joy to drive now. As the saying goes-there's no replacement for displacement. Also I don't even use the equalizer bars now if I'm not going far-the truck and trailer both sit level. When on a curve I don't feel the trailer pulling like I did with the other truck. I think its due to the strength difference of the frames between a 1/2 ton and 3/4. In 2011 we took a 2 week trip to Yellowstone and the Tetons. Unbelievable how the truck performed.

I had a 31ft Sierra TT and I had 1000lbs on the bumper and a WDH and I pulled it with a 2500 Silverado HD diesel and the truck didn't like that camper. I put air bags on truck and truck rode level but the 31ft and it a bumper pull just did not work for me. On flat land I could keep truck in cruise but if I started up any kind of hill I would then have to use my foot and I suffered. I pulled a 28ft camper before that camper and it worked great. DW loved the Sierra but she would not drive the truck so I went up to a bigger truck and a fifth wheel

Here is jd48 post hope it helps

QUOTE=jd48;1066697]We have a 2014 Freedom Express 297RLDS Liberty Edition and love it. Refrigerator and AC went bad this year but were repaired under warranty and both work great now. Some small cosmetic issues and the two recliners were replace due to damage. We went with the 15K AC due to the size of the TT. Love the sky light and solved the slide topper by having a hole cut above the sky light and clear vinyl sewn in place...works great.
Tongue weight came in at 1200 and now using an Equalizer WDS with RAM 1500 Hemi TV. PM me if you have questions.[/QUOTE]

Something a little funny if you had issues with a 3/4 2500 Chevy diesel. That truck should have handled quite well unless you where not using WDH. Can't believe your truck would not handle well on grades. I have a 2500 chevy 6.0 and 35ft tt and never had to add air bags just use good WDH. Works well. Later RJD
