Newbie observation

We still consider ourselves newbies in the camping world. We are sitting here relaxing in our camper after touring Mammoth Cave. A very long Wildwood TT just pulled in across from us. Its an older couple and the gentleman seems to be moving slow. I took our trash and and was walking back thinking I would introduce myself and offer to help. He was hooking up his stinky slinky bare handed. At that point I didn't want to shake hands so I came on inside.

Perhaps my point wasn't explained very well so I apologize. As I was walking back he popped off the cover to his dump valves and a good amount of "stuff", maybe a quart or so, gushed out. At that point I decided not to intro myself and shake hands.

I think I would pass on the hand shake also, but you could still say Hello how's it going, and ask if he has always had a problem with his shut off valve.

My DW is a germ a phob. She has made her 3 kids germ a phobs. They don't want to touch the commode seat so they knock it down with their foot or something. I haven't witnessed. I just hear it fall. I just learned to get it done and clean later. I usually wear throw a way gloves cause I am going straight to the truck from the dump station. I dunno. Safety first I guess. I have a septic pump and have worked on it several times. Just get it done and use comet or something to clean up.

I always wonder what the people that don a level 4 hazmat suit to dump tanks do when the have to change a diaper...

I'm sorry, but I have see what come outta the exhaust port of an infant, and I'd rather dump tanks without gloves that deal with that, given the choice.

I'm with Turbs... soap and hot water is all you need...

Ditto about dumping the black tank.
Soap and water for me too.
Don't understand all the hoopla about it.
And I used to be an EMT and am very aware of using PPE (Personal Protective Equipment )

Wow, you guys can really take ANY subject and really run with it, hilarious I say. As well as entertaining there Cowracer....but you posted at midnight, don't you folks ever sleep. Midnight "shots" and 1 a.m. bonfires were acceptable last week but you need to get back to work now. As for the slinky issue, I've also handled worse hazmat incidents both animal and infant without gloves after saying "I'll get them in a minute" then GUSH. I always thought the reason for connecting the black & grey tanks at one outlet was to allow us to rinse off using the grey water. But now I have this nasty rash that won't go away!

So--if you wear gloves, then take them off and handle them either throwing away or storing them, what good did they do you. I don't use gloves, don't stick my hands where they don't belong, and thoroughly wash my hands with soap and water BEFORE entering my unit.
What I really don't understand is why some folks where gloves, then take them off and store them somewhere in their unit for later usage. That one makes no sense to me.

I had just gotten back from the opening night at the Hockey game and was... Well... Lets just call it "getting ready for bed"

No gloves were used.

I agree, they have to touch the outside of the gloves to put them on. I guess it just makes them feel good.

Truth be told, you probably come in contact with worse things during a normal day, than the stinky slinky.

When I had jet skis we had a saying, "Ride more, worry less".
I think this is the same deal, "Camp more, worry less".

Well... I have to admit ... I do have a dedicated pair of gloves for dealing with the 'stinky-slinky'.

However, I seldom use them. They are long black HD rubber gloves that go half way up the forearm . When I do use them I rinse them off....hang to dry before putting them away.

I have a pump bottle of 'hand sanitizer' right handy at the storage bay to do a preliminary clean before I handle any water valves or go inside to wash up.

OH...I do refrain from eating Dorrito's from the bag when working with the Slinky !

In plumbing, grabbing a Dorito from a bag falls under the 3-second rule. We eat the whole thing.
