Newbie Water Question

First of what is probably lots of posts...

The What: I purchased a 2016 Villa 402QBQ to be used in a permanent location that uses well water with heavy Iron. We plan on staying there 3-4 nights a week for family of 5 - we live 10 minutes away so its ultra convenient. I do want clean water, so i want to make sure my water is clean.

Im sure there will be lots of things we need but the thing I am trying to figure out.

1. What water filter do i need to buy for the whole RV (I did decide i want a whole RV filter).

Here is what i was thinking....either a 2 cannister or 3 cannister system. With the below system was looking at maybe the 14K gallon one just for quantity.

I was debating between the metaltrap Ultra
MetalTrap Ultra Dual Filtration System, Complete (available in 3 sizes) | Hydropure Technologies

Or i was going to try a combination of micron/charcoal in a 3 cannister system.

2. Where do you put these systems in the 402QBQ? would rather not leave outside since its there full time.

Thanks in advance!

Tom

If you have heavy iron in the water, I think you would be better off with a water softener. Camping World has the units that are plumbed into the water system and will remove the iron from the water. They are not cheap, but if it were me, that is what I would get.

Contact the guy at RV Water Filter Store: Standard Filter Canisters for Whole RV. He'll steer you right.

If you are going to be using it like a stick house you should invest in a good stick house style water filtering system. I filter my well water at my shop before sending it to any of the faucets however the outside hydrants are not filtered.

If the well has high iron content you will be quite disappointed with a cannister type filter system. What you need is a true Iron Filter that uses potassium permanganate to regenerate the unit.

I could do a water softener and a cannister filter...would the combination be good?

Which would go first?

I did contact RV Water Store, but he admitted high Iron was not something he handled well with his cannisters, he suggested a BIRM cannister in 3rd cannister as potential help.

He tried to reach out to the Hydropure MetalTrap Utlra folks to see if that would work well.

A water softener is not a good choice for iron removal. A birm filter could possibly work if the iron content is not to high and there is no hydrogen sulfide in the water.

If you do use a water softener, be sure to check your water heater anode rod every month or so if you have a Suburban water heater.

I'm no expert but i am pretty sure that a water softener is designed to remove calcium and magnesium ions (hard water). I don't believe a water softener will help with Iron.

You will be unsatisfied with a canister type filter or just a water softener for your high iron water. I know you said you'd like to keep it inside your rig but you need to seriously think about a residential type iron filter/water softener combination system. A small storage shed at your seasonal site could house the components.

There are some small units out there but for the amount of people you mentioned will be using water (and the frequency) nothing small is going to last and continue to work for very long.

I you have iron in your water don't buy a softener. They work great for calcium, but not iron unless it is a very very small unit.
