North & South Carolina in April

We are headed to the the beaches of North and South Carolina in April but we also would like to do some hiking closer to the mountains and we are looking for suggestions. We prefer state parks but want electricity. We have never been to this part of the country so we would appreciate comments re: parkss, roads, weather, etc. Is this too early to head toward the mountains?
Thanks in advance.

The beach will still be chilly down here. Mountains will be chilly but should be ok. What area of mountains are you thinking? It is several hours difference from beach to mountains here.

This is a great option! We loved it there. I also recommend Jordan Lake near Apex, NC I believe, nice private sites.

Agree with Stone Mountain. You can camp throughout the year down here. I'm camping at the beach right now and will be in the mountains in a couple of weeks.
I hear the state parks near Myrtle Beach are good but haven't stayed at them.

Thanks for the ideas. We are coming from and to Minnesota and will be probably be going as far south as Savannah GA. so we will be crossing over the mountains probably in N. Carolina on the way back home but we can be flexible.
A suggested route for crossing the mountains from East to West would be helpful.
Thanks

If you've never been to the area, you MUST drive the section of the Blue Ridge Parkway from Ashville west to Cherokee.

Also, don't miss Hunting Island State Park near Beaufort, SC. Reservations are tough, but maybe you can get in. Get on the beach side loop if you can. Although, this time of year, the bugs might be fewer...and it is beautiful in the back area.

If you stay in Savannah, check out Skidaway State Park.

Huntington beach state park, south of myrtle beach is great. Right across the road is Brooke Green gardens which should be beautiful at that time of year. Murrells inlet is nwarby with tons of doning options and live local bands

Trust me...if you're coming from Minnesota April/May anywhere in the south is going to fell like early summer in Minnesota. Plan to travel through the Blue Ridge Mnts on your way to the beaches and check out the Rhododendrons in bloom.
Enjoy your trip.

Happy Trails

I-40 heads west from NC through TN. You may want to look at that route.

Table Rock state park in the mtns of south carolina. Its on sc nc line. Take I26 south out of asheville, take a right at the second exit once inside sc, hwy 11. The park will be on your right. Hwy 11 is labeled a scenic rd also. I would say a 45 min drive off the interstate. Water and electric at each site, dump station, and nice bath house. plenty of trails and scenary.

NC beaches

Sc has state campgrounds around the Myrtle Beach area 2 within 10 miles or so each other then another maybe fifty miles toward Charleston. All have water and electric. all have sewer but limited supply. Have to reserve to get the sewer. Shorts and tee shirt weather, but the water is to cold unless your truly from the north, then maybe. It's about 7-8 drive from Wilmington to the mountains. Maybe a little less if you go to the foothills like Asheville. It's around 6 hrs from myrtle beach to Asheville in real driving time. Plenty of camping around North and South Carolina. Probably wouldn't go any farther N than Morehead City area to stay in the warmer zone that time of year. Just my opinion

Two strong recommendations. Huntington Beach SP about 25 miles below Myrtle beach, SC.
Beach access, wildlife viewing, bike trails, and Brookgreen Gardens where you can spend the whole day. We stay there each year and enjoy it more each time we go. Next is Skidaway Island SP just outside Savannah. We stay there a couple of times each year. Enjoy Old Savannah, Tybee Island "Crab Shack", and visit Wormsloe Plantation. Also agree with Stone Mountain SP just above Elkin, NC. Nice camping, hiking, fishing, etc.

x2 on Hunting Island near Beuford. Davidson River off I26 in the mountains near Brevard NC has a federal park with a limited no of electric and water sites. 16$ a night with senior pass. No sewer but this area is great for hiking and doing the Blue Ridge Parkway. If you want to tour Charleston James Island County park is close.

This is my "home" region. Recommend Huntington Beach State Park close to Murrell's Inlet. I stock my freezer from Murrell's Inlet Seafood Market. Also, Edisto Island just south of Charleston for a rural beach experience. Skidaway Island State Park has a tram tour of Savannah that will pick you up at the park. I am just so-so on Hunting Island State Park. Beaufort is a really nice small town with some interesting tours and history but Hunting Island is now so big that you may have to drive to the beach. I'll see you in April at Edisto and Huntington Beach. Not too hot, bug hoards are not yet out. I have 2 wks at each. Look at the Corps of Engineers campgrounds in North Carolina- Recreation.gov. By the way, I live on Skidaway Island when I am not on the road and will be happy to answer any Savannah questions. Hope you have a wonderful trip to my part of the country!

Stone Mt. Is very difficult to get into, book very early, NOW! Skid away island is also a GREAT place, we loved it! I would plan a stay in the NC Mts. Take a day and cruise the Blue Ridge Parkway, go up Mt Mitchell, head up to Boone, do Chimney Rock, a lot of great things to see and do in the Mts.

How difficult to get reservations in the state parks in this area? We don't have our rig yet so we can't really make any reservations yet.

Stone Mt. is VERY difficult, we are actually going next week, but I've tried no less than 12 times in the past 2 year's and it is booked well in advance. It seem's to be the most difficult to get into for us. We frequent Ebeneezer in Rock Hill, SC, never had a problem, actually never have a problem around us, we are just north of Charlotte, we just struggle with Stone Mt., all other's have been good to get reservation's.
