Not 1....but 2 blowouts on our way home this past Sunday
We were on our way home from one last weekend hoorah before the kids start school and had two blowouts on our way home. I was able to change the first out with our spare while on the side of the interstate but when the 2nd blew we had to wait on a 24hr tire service guy to change it. I am just thankful he was able to get it done fairly quickly and that no one was hurt. I am not real sure as to what caused the blowouts. They were both 2 yr old Goodyear Marathons and I had checked the pressure just before heading home. We were traveling between 60-65 when both blew. I am pretty sure that I will be going back with some type of LT tire when repaired. Now we are waiting on insurance to get it estimated so we can get it fixed.

Good grief! Sorry to hear about your experience, but glad nobody was hurt.
We are about to replace our tires (only a year old!) because the right side ones are worn to the tread indicators after only about 11,000 miles. I have been doing a TON of research and since our rig weighs about 14,000 loaded and is on 7K axles with wheels rated for 3,960lbs @ 110psi, we've decided to move away from our Westlake E rated ST tires to Sailun S637 G rated tires.
We figured the our tire options are (not counting mounting, balance and disposal):
Goodyear G614, G rated, 14 ply all steel carcass (about $330 per tire)
Michelin XPS RIB, E rated, 10 ply all steel carcass (about $270 per tire)
Sailun S637, G rated, 14 ply all steel carcass (about $155 per tire)

Did you ever get your fifth wheel and truck weighted at a Cat Scale when fully loaded?

Yes. As pictured in my sig, we weighed 24,784lbs. That was on a CAT scale and after filling up with fuel.

Were you running any type of TPMS on your rig at the time?

WOW sorry to see this, glad you are all ok. I've used GY Marathon on a lot of my trailers with no issues but that was earlier in my years. I worry about all the ST tires on the market today with all company's trying to cut cost in so many ways. Also most tires are made in China these days no matter what manufacture brand tire.
Hope all your RV repairs go well.
With your best guess were you overloaded for those tires? I know FR and other RV manuf. seem to borderline the weight to tire match up it seems to save a dollar.

I weighed as soon as I pulled back into town. 2011 3500HD crew cab with 365SAQ. Total - 22800. Trailer - 11480. Wasn't running any type of TPMS at the time but plan on it from now on. Thinking of going with the Michelin XPS Rib but will be real close on weight is my concern.

I feel your pain. When I pulled a 5th wheel we always kept two spare tires. Our insurance company actually went after the tire manufacturer to no avail. We had 5 blowouts in our 10 years with 5th wheels. Most of them tore the heck out our everything.
Unfortunately there's not a lot of room for larger or much different tires. How is your unit stored? Are the tires exposed to the sun for long periods of time?
The last blowout was outside Atlanta going to Disney. it blew off the fender and sewer connection. Our insurance covered everything every time and it took a long time to get the unit back each time. If feel for you. Take pictures of everything for your records. Check all repairs when they are done....climb under the unit and look at repairs. Sad thing is it's not your fault, but it will be one mark against you on the insurance, I don't care what they say. They probably won't drop you. However when we got our motorhome, the insurance company we've had since 1991 would not cover it due to all the blow outs. Good Luck.
Oh and the fun of using a broken sewer pipe in Disney Fort was a duct tape nightmare.

It seems as though that tire failures are not very brand particular. I know this issue has been beat to death on these forums, but it is a very real & ongoing problem. Have read about failures with & without TPMS monitoring systems. So the real question is, what do we do about it? I know that there are many factors to consider about these failures. Air pressure, road conditions, speed, weight, etc. I know that many of you have gone to great lengths to avoid these problems, & that there is only so much we can do.
I did in the recent past contact FR about upgrading to a tire rated above what comes on them from the factory & was told by a FR rep. that doing so would void the warranty on a new unit. So again I ask, what is the solution? I know many of us (me included) are very loyal to particular brands, but as seen on these forums that may not be a very reliable solution.
I sure hope someone comes up with a good fix. Thanks to all who have really worked so hard to cure this problem.

My son told me he kept blowing tires on his 5th Wheel, til he switched to 16". Not sure what size you're running, but he really wanted us to get 16" when we got our new trailer. (And the mostly seem to come with 15").

I run Michelin LT E rated after having trad separation on Cooper ST. On second set with no problems. They are made in USA. I believe Marathons are now Chinese made. I change tires at 7 years regardless of wear. Too much riding on them.

If rv sets a long time on concrete tire people say concrete dries out the rubber. Don't know this for a fact.

I had a tire blow out late Saturday night on my way back to Florida from Virginia. Luckily, it did minimal damage to my unit - no need to even report it to insurance. However, I do agree that the tire issue does not seem to have a good working solution at all. I also agree that FR seems to put the tire on the trailer that is most beneficial to them cost wise. I am still using trailer tires. May need to start looking at LT tires instead. I do know this - I went no faster than 55 MPH the rest of the way back to Florida and arrived without incident. 5ers and TTs were passing me right and left and boy, was I tempted to increase my speed, but I did not want another blow out.
55 MPH may be all I do from now on.

Thanks for the info on your tire choices/options. Personally, I'd go with Michelin. Why take the risk with a cheaper tire when Michelin is a very very good tire...

With both blowouts on the rear axle, I'd check it's alignment and the shackles for wear.
