Odd hitch setup
This past weekend there was an older TT parked across from us, I'm guessing '60s vintage. It had all the badges removed so I don't know what brand, I had never seen one quite like it. Anyway, the trailer tongue was supported by two small pneumatic tires, maybe 8-10 inch diameter. The coupler was mounted on a hinged A-frame and just swung up out of the way when uncoupled. When they hooked up, they just dropped the coupler over the ball and took off. There was no tongue weight on the TV, it still being supported by the two hitch tires. The tires pivoted when cornering just like the front landing gear on an airplane. The TV only had to pull and not support part of the load. I was wondering if this is something manufacturers experimented with at one time or if maybe it was a home made setup. Anyone seen anything like that?

They are used on some race car trailers that are towed behind motorhomes that have a large rear overhang to take the stress off the back of the sides, top and etc. Don't have a National Dragster mag. handy, so I can't tell you the manif......sorry.

Sure! I've seen those before. They were made to be able to tow your trailer behind the family car. You should see the actual hitch it was meant to connect to. Basically a metal vice clamp with a ball you would tighten down around your bumper. That was probably more like around the 50's or so.. I think Acme was one maker.
NOooo I never used one!!

You mean the Coffman's and the Allstate's... errr.. I mean... I have no idea what you're talking about.
Those were a little before my time, but I might remember seeing a couple on an old rusty "T" once or twice.

If you watch the movie Long Long Trailer, with Lucille
Ball, they have what you are talking about attached to the trailer hitch.

That's it, except I don't believe it hooked directly to the receiver. The ball socket was on its own hinged frame that dropped over the ball. If you go to the website it shows this as being used in conjunction with a 5th wheel to keep the TV from sagging. The one I saw was mounted to the trailer and carried the full tongue weight. Same concept though. Yea I haven't watched the Long Long Trailer in quite a few years. Very funny and I can relate to most of it, except the part when she is trying to fix dinner while they're moving.
