OK, here's the dumb question of the day.

We recently purchased a 2011 puma 296kbh. It is equipped with a 55 amp battery converter which I assume is the same as an inverter. I'm thinking that's cool! Then I get the deer in the headlights look, scratch my head and think........what the heck does it do?
Also, when I'm hooked up to electrical doe my battery charge?

Doubt if you have an inverter, unless a former owner installed one.
All RVs have converters. They convert shore power to 12vDC to run the 12v stuff.
Suggest you read The 12 volt Side of Life website.

Your converter is a converter/charger. It "converts" 110v shore power to 12v DC to power 12v systems in your rig as well as charge your battery/ies.

An inverter would be powered by your battery/ies and supply 110v electrical power when shore power is not available. This is a third-party add-on device.

It is important to understand your electrical systems and how to properly maintain them. I might recommend spending a little time at "the 12volt side of life". It's a great primer and well worth your time to understand both sides of your electrical systems.

Thank you. Now that I think of it, besides the a/c, HW heater and the wall plugs, most of the systems in the trailer are 12v.

Actually, your WH also requires 12v as well as your fridge. Both can run on electricity or propane, however, the control board, thermostat, and pilots require 12v. The thermostat that controls your A/C also requires 12v.

About the only things in your rig that can operate without 12v would be your microwave, outlets, and possibly TV (some rigs have 12v TV's). Understandably, your converter and battery bank are crucial even when plugged in to shore power.

It's not at all a dumb question. We've all been "new".

X3. It seems like it's going around... 3 posts from 3 different individuals (that I've seen) just out of the blue... completely uncharacteristic posts for this forum in the past 24 hours.

Hopefully it's just a 24 hour bug.

Your question was not DUMB. It would have been DUMB not to ask, sorry about the rude guy. But people are people, take the good and throw away the bad. Don't give it a second thought, ask away.....

Be nice. It seems to me he DID ask a different question based on the answer he got to his first question.
