Old television replacement

We have an older RV with the old-style television that we would like to replace with a flat-screen. Anyone have any helpful suggestions? Thank you in advance.

Any brand should work unless you want it to run of 12 volts.

Here's how I replaced the old clunker in my Cardinal and gained storage space.

Removed old TV and pull out shelf it sat on.

Built cabinet to hold flat screen. I hinged it at the top because the sides weren't strong enough to hold the weight. Added pull out shelf.

That is nice! The one we are replacing is over the dashboard, but the storage for DVD's, etc would be great. Thanks for sharing!

Did this to an older unit I had. Went as inexpensive as I could.

If using a wall mount bracket , get a RV model that has a pin to secure the unit from swinging about when underway.

Uh oh, looks too good ... I'm in trouble!

What a great idea to put the TV on a 'swinging' mount so you get the storage behind it where the old 'tube' used to be. Unfortunately, you did such a great job I have no choice but to try to duplicate it!

Our (note: CKBDK is my better half) TV is over the dash so I'll have to checkout the strength of the upper portion of the cabinet it is in to know if 'hanging it is an option.

Is the TV you mounted an "RV" TV (i.e.: 12 volt, bump/vibration resistant) or a typical household TV (i.e.: 110 volt, available at Wal-Mart/Best Buy/etc)? Am I correct in assuming that you mounted the TV low on the 'door' to best position it for viewing or was there another reason?

Do you have latches or something to keep the TV from swinging around while driving?

Purchased TV from Best Buy 110V. 1) Mounted low for viewing. 2) Open area on top for release of heat.

If you look close, you'll see two pin latches on the bottom of the cabinet.

These latches are supposed to be used horizontal. I had to notch one side of the latch so handle would drop into notch and not wiggle free and drop down.

When I had a class C and did this upgrade I used the least expensive flat screen then would fit. Ols tube unit had a "collar" that went over it and screwed down to the shelf the tv sat on, so I just put some all purpose screws thru the flat screens base into that shelf. I worked great. I used the space behind it for a media computer. The first picture is before and the other two are after. I also put surround sound in and mounted the center channel above the tv.

Good luck

Tkx for update w/new info CBVP!

Looks like I have a new project!

Time to measure the existing TV & its location to see what TV will fit, how much room I have behind it for DVD device/storage, etc.

Then the 'fun' of crafting a new configuration.

Will take many of your ideas into account & probably try to duplicate it though may see if I can figure out a way to incorporate DVD player (&/or sound system as suggested by Gassman6674).

Thanks again for the info/idea!

Good idea to try to incorporate sound system!

Seems like a good idea to try to incorporate a sound system (& possibly a DVD player, etc.) into the "box" while I'm replacing the TV. Was just thinking of DVD, etc., storage behind the TV as it seems I never have enough storage.

Will need to look at the TVs enclosure to see if mounting the new TV on a 'flap' or directly to the base as you did is the better choice ... both good options but yours is obviously the easier to accomplish.

Adding a sound bar &/or DVD may also make the 'flap' idea a little less workable ... gonna have ta cogitate some on this

I have an air vent behind the TV (up by the top of the windshield) and a vent on one side of the box so ventilation should not be too hard to insure even if I add a sound bar, etc.

Thanks again for the ideas/information, Gasman6674!
