Ontario CA - MTO, towing maxes on a G license
Just thought I would hare some info and see what other people are doing.
I went down to the rv dealer I go to and asked about a sob 5er that is brand new and doesn't show specs online. says half ton towable. ya ok I don't believe that for second. I actually don't think there are may 5er's that are but that's a different story. in talking with my sales guy we got on the topic of plate sticker renewals and trailer max weight etc. he told me he thought I should be paying more for my sticker since I tow a trailer. I told him I don't think so. we looked at my ownership and my truck is licensed for gvw 3000kg. which my truck is close to that they give you a 99 kg wiggle room before you have to go to the renewal fee calculator. my truck is actually 3045 kg ( 6700 lb). it however get me thinking and obviously looking into all this.
so here is what I found out. a G license can have a max combined weight of 11000 kg ( truck and trailer, 24200lb) but a G license can only have a max trailer weight of 4600 kg ( 10120lb). I never knew this. I wonder if other people did?
if you want to go above that you should get a D license.
I actually called MTO for this info.
all this got me thinking my truck is legal at 3000kg but what about the ford's? they weigh more and have the max tow and HD payload packages. what are the dealers or people licensing these vehicles at? I checked with 2 friends both have f150's with 7200 lb gvwr. both are licensed at 3000kg ( 6600lb).
so I'm not specifically talking about brand of truck , my buddies have fords so I can easily check these and my Ram. more looking for info what people are doing.
does everyone already know all this?
what is your trucks licensed for?
anyone towing with 3/4 or 1 tons and or big trailers over 10k what does your licensing fee cost and do you tow it with a G license?

Manitoba.
Truck over 4500kg. Requires yearly inspection.
Towing a trailer with a gvwr of over 4500. Requires class 3 license.
That same class 3, allows you to drive a tandem truck. ( ie dump or cement)

Since July 2011 rules have changed for towing a fifth wheel in Ontario (not for a travel trailer).......
The Hitch House Motorhome Specialists | Ontario Drivers License Requirements |
http://www.pstc.ca/ontario-introduce...g-july-1-2011/
I license my Ford F250 for the max 9600 lbs GVRW and cost about $230.00 per year. I pull a 8600 lbs travel trailer.

That's not strictly true anymore. The rules were relaxed in 2011 as long as your TV is a full-size pickup and you don't exceed the 11000kg combined limit. Newspaper article and government website (neither of them do a good job explaining it, and the government website link is broken).
You wouldn't want to tow over 4600kg with anything less than a full size pickup anyways.

Great link!
on a side note and off topic - how is the mileage with your V10? I was looking at one last week and was a little scared how bad it might be

Should be around 6, with the sabre.
That's fine with me. I've got a few things to do to it over the winter..
Should knock it up a couple mpg.

wow, that would hurt the wallet a bit. I currently only tow about 1200 miles per year and get 10-11 mpg. and unloaded get 18-19 mpg doing around 12500 miles per year. what are you planning to do to the truck?

Five star tuning.
Headers and intake.
A few less mpg is easier on the wallet than the usual repairs on a diesel.

Yup... the standard fee for personal use vehicles (even commercial types used for personal use according to the chart here... only the ones that have 'maximum' in the first column require the fee calculator). Going up again next year.
But getting off-topic... this thread was about licencing requirements.

"if you want to go above that you should get a D license"
Not correct! - In fact, D license is still restricted to 4600kg - going over 4600kg total trailer weight requires an A license!
'D' license allows you to drive a heavier vehicle, not tow a heavier vehicle.
You can however get an 'AR' (A restricted), which is little easier to obtain.

This is the link that mto gave me. He said anyone over 3000 kg has to go to that and use commercial. I'm not sure because I am personal $108 per year max 3000 kg.

Can't say I disagree. I don't think I drive enough for diesel either.
