Do you have any statistics that support the claim that it is safer? Or is it just your feels?

I have stayed at Walmart, etc but I prefer hook-up sites. I belong to Passport America and they have half-price overnighting all over the US. On my spring trip from Texas to Idaho I was able to plan all stops at PA campgrounds, except in Moab, UT.

I don't know about being safer or not but there was a guy in RV park that that had his 5er tagged in Wallmart parking lot. One side was spray painted with all kinds of symbols.

Drive till tired, look for rest area, truck stop, wal mart. 3-4 hours rest and away again.
Only "camp" at final destination.

While I would not recommend staying in Harlem at the Walmart.. I think ones safety is in one's head, not reality, it just helps them sleep better. Bad things happen everywhere.
I have heard many stories of Thefts from campgrounds, more than issues at Walmart. So I guess the Walmart is the safer option... According to criminal minds (TV show) truck stocks are full of serial killers and prostitution. But I have yet to meet either...
I think the key is commonsense for ones safety, if it does not look right it probably is not. So often when people get themselves into trouble they say something did jot seem right or a I got strange vibe... BUT they ignored it.

I did not find how long of stay is allowed in Texas, but I did find this handy brochure. If you will be traveling through Texas unless you are just crossing the pan handle it is a couple days of driving to get through it. This may be handy to print out or save on a device to help you plan stopping for the night.

Interesting- that's one of the few negative stories I've heard. The safety aspect is often touted, but I've never heard of any hard evidence that this is the case. I think, as doc73 indicates, that it's more to do with personal perspective.
I will say- I sleep much lighter at a Walmart or truck stop. The last truck stop we stayed at was in Colorado at a pretty high elevation (11,000', I think). I think it was a combination of the elevation and light sleeping that I woke up not feeling very rested. In fact, my wife took over driving the next day while I napped.

I remember stopping in the first rest area west of Texakana and seeing a map of the US with a little sign that said "At this point in Texas you are closer to Chicago Ill. then to EL Paso and it gave the mileage.

I've camped at walmarts, any retail parking lot (usually behind the store out of site), on streets, in city park parking lots, and if the woods are nearby, we'll just pull off into the woods and do our thing.

Anybody drive at night and sleep in rest areas during the day? Safety wouldn't be as big of an issue in daylight I'm thinking.

My wife, our two children and our three cats drove from Wisconsin to Key Largo, FL and back for spring break stopping only for fuel and rest. We stayed at rest areas and two truck stops along the way with zero issues. Felt safe the entire time. Only stayed for three to six hours at a time. I did all the driving and drove day or night depending on the time I stopped.
My wife and I agreed we loved the convenience and would do it again.
On a side note we always carry protection when traveling - not that this swayed us one way or another.
I would do whatever feels right to you. Safe travels all!

Bad idea. Nothing like a firearms charge from local police to ruin your trip unless you never leave your home state.

I'm sure the police in a state that does not recognize your permit would strongly disagree.

Unless you consider being murdered better than a weapons charge. Personally, I never travel without one. Kind of like a fire extinguisher in my opinion.

Might be a little noisier due to increased traffic in the rest area but if that doesn't bother you then an advantage would be less traffic on the road! I think if it fit in our plans we would do this.
