Paid a ransom....

So..... late last month my left rear electric stab jack stopped working. I had an appointment to take it to Chesaco RV in Frederick on 2 Aug which is my "home dealer". This is warranty work. Anyway, fast forward to this week. The trailer is still at the dealer and the part is on order. I need my trailer for a trip to Cape May this coming weekend so I went to the dealer to get it. I had to actually PAY for the part that was on order so I could take my trailer. Apparently, people have brought their units in for warranty work and then picked them up for a trip then not returned leaving this dealer stuck for the part. I had to pay $320 as a "down payment" to get my trailer. I will be reimbursed when the part comes in and they install it.

Is this normal?

Marty

That is very strange . Many dealers will order warranty parts and once the come in will call you to make an appointment to bring the unit back in for the repair. I looked at Cheasco when shopping for mine and was not impressed.

Have had all kinds of work done at Keystone RV a mere 25-30 or so miles west of Frederick with no problems whatsoever. They have always called me when parts were in. I looked to buy a Rockwood 2702SS in Frederick before I bought my Flagstaff 27BESS at Keystone. Same trailer, different markings. Glad I went with Keystone.
I'd be on their butts when you take it back. No reason for any dealer to take that long to get parts in IMHO.

X2. My dealership will order parts, let me use MY fiver if I need it and it is usable while waiting. This way it isn't taking.g up space on their lot. Win win situation. The whole paying for a warranty part and then being refunded later seems awfully sketchy to me. I hope you got that in writing somewhere.

Have not used the Fredrick location, we bought our first camper (a popup) from the Jessup location - had problems with the Jessup service department but never had to pick up my camper without the work being completed, so did not see your particular issue but I do think ransoming your camper to ensure you come back is strange.

When shopping for my second camper, I looked at a Roo at the Fredrick location - was not impressed with the sales office - and they wanted a ridicules amount of money for dealer prep. Like DaGrinch, we ended up getting the same floorplan in the Flagstaff version from Keystone. We drive by the Fredrick location to get to Keystone, but so far they have been much better to deal with then Chesaco was.

Keystone advertises on their website that they will work on your camper, even if you did not buy from them - I know this does not help for the current issue, but maybe next time you need service - might give them a try.

Isn't trust wonderful? What's weird though is that you were never going to pay for the part to begin with!

Here is the deal. Each and every one of us expects other people to behave as we do, we think our own behavior is normal.

They expect you to somehow beat them out of the $320, JUST as they would do if given the opportunity.

I would NEVER do business with them after hearing this story!

Yes. I did get it in writing. Part of me understands their situation BUT I think $320 is a large chunk of cash. I may have been ok with $100 deposit to ensure I brought it back.

In order for the dealer to get reimbursed for the new part, they must return the defective one. You don't come back for the warranty work, they have to eat the cost of the part.

My dealer will even send me the parts with a return shipping label to send the old parts back! If the dealer doesn't have trust in you, I wouldn't have trust in the dealer.

Actually, all they would eat is the cost of shipping it back to the factory... Maybe.

I'd have told them two things. One, I'm not paying you for work/parts not completed/installed, and two, I'm leaving now with my RV and will be back when you get the part.

This would make sense if it wasn't a warranty repair.
