Pet peeve... handling of sewer hose

Never ceases to amaze me the number of people who install and uninstall the sewer hose with their bare hands. Ugh... I use disposable medical gloves at all times, then wash my hands from the elbows down with a disinfectant soap after I’m done.

I'd be more afraid of something splashing in my face than getting something on my hands. Are you wearing a face shield also? Do you also wear gloves when you do #2 and handle the TP?

Good for you. Then I’m assuming you haven’t died like the rest of us have.

Everyone's entitled to their method.

Funny thing, I don't see people running around with Septic pumping tanks wearing surgical gloves. I do see the drivers using a lot of hand sanitizer though. Bet they don't bite their fingernails too.

Amazing how people are so afraid of the sewer hose but don't give a second thought to working in their garden that has been fertilized with various kinds of animal feces. Ditto for changing a baby diaper.

Just rinse it down well and be sure and wash your hands.

FWIW, one encounters as many, if not more, germs when using public restrooms. Ever wonder how many germs are on the door handle, left there by all the people who do their business and then leave without washing hands.

People who try and live sterile lives probably have more allergies and other issues than those of us who were sent out to play with the animals and dirt.

I've tried many different brands of disposable gloves and every single time they'd break. So I finally went to Menards and got myself a pair of heavy duty PVC-coated work gloves. I keep them with my hoses so I always have them when I dump the tanks.

My problem is that I typically set them to the side and forget to put them on. Haven't died yet.

While growing up in the country, my dad had several rental property’s. He had lived through the depression so a dollar was a great deal of money to him. It cost about $15 for the local septic company to come pump a tank. When one of the septic tanks acted up, he would have me dig and remove the lid, then using a bucket, remove any solids and dispose of its contents around some oaks and pecan trees and run a snake through all the lines. Guess what, gloves as we have today were not available from the local hardware store in the 1960’s.

Ate dirt, drank from garden hose, swam after eating, rode pedal bike for 10k miles...without a helmet, roller skated without knee pads, elbow pads or helmet. 57 years later....still here.

How is this a “pet peeve” or annoyance for you? Maybe something you find gross, but I can’t imagine being annoyed by my neighbor’s glove habits.

We don’t wear gloves at camp when when setting up or breaking down. But I also have soap in the hatch and we wash well immediately following the handling of it.

Now at the dump station, where I can’t easily wash my hands- we glove up.

What I enjoy most- watching people glove up AND THEN TOUCHING EVERYTHING WITH THEIR CONTAMINATED HANDS.

My pet peeve in regards to gloves and sewer dumping, would be the annoying practice of using gloves while dumping, then tossing them on the ground at the dump station when finished. Ugh! I wonder if the person who has to pick up those gloves wears gloves?

Everyone's being kind of mean. Maybe Oburg is a doctor or something and has a reason to be more germ cautious than other folks! Scrubbing with disinfectant like you're going into surgery is a bit overboard for most folks, but I hope you all at least wash your hands afterwards.

I may be new, but I wear gloves every time. Husband and I bought a box of 100 when we were RV equipment shopping. Of course, usually I'm sweating and end up pushing my glasses up or wiping my face without thinking and then I feel gross. We also plan (but forgot to buy) to use hand sanitizer after.

There's nothing wrong with being clean. I used to work as a custodian for a short time for my church and I loved each and every one of those people, but I still wore gloves when I cleaned the bathrooms. I wash up after changing a baby or cleaning the cat box too.

I haven't been at this long enough to develop a pet peeve.

This though...this is right up there with people who leave diapers in shopping carts.

Did the same plus shoveled tons of cow poop I'm 20 years older than you. We were never "bubble wrapped" or given a "sterile environment". Go figure.

Worse yet, if the pup pooped in the house it often got picked up with bare hands, flushed down the toilet, and hands immediately washed with soap and water. Amazing stuff this skin we have.

I'm new to RV'ing but I am not really afraid of germs. I have 3 kids and 2 dogs. I clean crap and urine as needed. But with the camper what I do is hook my fresh water first along with power. Then I open the outside shower on the rear of my unit and clamp the wand in the tray thing, my wife runs in and gets the slide out extended and grabs hand soap to place on the rear bumper by the shower. While she is doing that, I grab the hose bare handed and get situated, then walk to the outside shower and have her turn it on as I soap and rinse.

I revers the process leaving. The last thing I do is wash my hands with the outside shower and then in-hook my fresh hose and put it away.

I'm a bit surprised that dealing with the black tank or the hoses is not a big deal to me at all. I had fear going in to this that it would be horrible and smelly, but it honestly is not.

I have the black tank flush thing built into my Apex, so I finish the trip at the site by draining the black tank, re-filling to 2/3 full and then opening the valve to drain it 4 times. On the 3rd and 4th time, I am pushing clear and clean water. Finally I run the soap water out from the grey tank. That is it. I have yet to be forced to get personal with anything that smells of sewage or touch anything with obvious residue.

I know you will think I am nuts, but I smelled the flex hose all 3 times we used our new trailer after the flush process.... and honestly.... almost no remaining odor at all. I don't think I would want to drink from it! But I do not look at it as a device that is disgustingly covered in solid material or residue. If it is to get funky, I can easily toss it in the trash and start over with a fresh new one. Time will tell.

For the OP it really shouldn't be a pet peeve as much as a concern for the others sanitation. As long as that individual doesn't run right in after dumping and prepare you a meat loaf you should be good to go. Always a good way to get the finger nails clean
