We have this one, we bought on sale at lowes last spring. We just take one of the bottles out and hook it up to the hose. I think the hose is about 10-15' long. We thought about getting a hose with the quick connect so we could plug into the grill port, but haven't gotten there yet.
I think its about 50,000 btu its not as hot as a wood fire, but you dont have smoke either. We are all allergic to smoke so it works great for us!

It came with pumice rock, so its really light weight too. It will fit in the basement of our 5th wheel, and you can easily carry it to a friends camper as well.

We have Campfire In A Can. It's a bit pricy but gives a large realistic fire. I am not a fan of the small units marketed by camping world. A few years back, Sam's Club carried a nice one for under $100 but I haven't seen one there in a while.

I have this one and have been happy with it. They sure don't throw as much heat as you can get from a real fire, but I like the ease of use and can use it at home or camping.

PROS: Clean, less weight than firewood, no smoke, no embers going on the neighbors awning....
CONS: none!

Campfire in a Can is the best out there!

Campfire In A Can - Portable Propane Fire Pit for Backyard & Camping

Camco makes a "Little Red Firepit" for less money but we liked the 3 in 1 design (burns propane, charcoal or wood) of the Campfire in a can

This one is the best. There are a few different models but this one has Auto ignition with the push of a button. It's a little bigger than it looks in the picture. Perfect size, not too big not too small.

Thanks Dan, as a matter of fact I was looking at this one yesterday. I was wondering what the size of it was, then I saw another one that was similar it said 19", that's not too bad, I just don't want one that goes on top of a table, we want it for the ground. Yes this one looks great. I like it.

I'll say it again. Watch the description of the one you buy closely. Not all of them have the push button Auto ignition.

We love this model and use it regularly.

Our fire pit ( shown in post #2 )has push button ignition, but its not a deal breaker either way.
Its propane, not gasoline. You can always light with a match or grill lighter

I looked online. Is that fire pit 48 inches wide?

+1 for the Outland fire pit! Comes with the rocks and also a lid. I went to camping world and bought a camco hose and quick connect fitting to connect The fire pit to the quick connect fitting on our RV. Works great! I have a picture of it connected to our RV in the following blog post (scroll about halfway down):

Here is a link to the fire pit I bought:

One alternative solution to a propane or traditional wood fire pit is a pellet pit. We have the Flame Genie. Lights easy, puts off great heat with a nice looking flame, and has virtually nothing left over after you let it burn out. The pellets are easily found at most hardware stores and cost about $8 for a 40# bag.

I mention this, only as a secondary option that you may not have knew about. We were looking for propane until I saw someone with this last year.

Here is ours in action...

I don't know if lowes still has them or not. I found my reciept and looked up the number, but it pulled up a crazy low price. I'd have bough a couple if they were really $50. I also found the same one on another site that showed the prices id seen before. I purchased last spring on a end of season sale and got a discount.

If it showed that price online in my area I would order one and pick it up. In my area it is 199. I have found things Miss priced at Lowe's and they honored the price. It does only have it at that price in your town.

But it would not fit in my storage Bays. I I would use it at my home.

I bought this one, similar to the one Don linked early on. This was the smallest, lightest and cheapest I found locally (at end end-of-season sale, I got it for ~$70CDN which is around $50US).

I couldn't tell with the one Don linked, but on the one I bought, the lid has three tabs that lock into brackets on the body with just a twist so the lid doubles as a carrying handle. The door to the basement where I store it is a bit narrow so I have to tilt it on its side and a bit of dust from the rocks falls out but is not a problem to deal with at my end-of-season cleanup. One side of the handle fractured during assembly but a bit of J-B Weld made it better than new and it has worked well for 2 seasons now.

Its getting almost impossible to carry firewood these days and a hassle and expense to buy near to or at a campground. The flame is nicely distributed through the lava rock and the instant variability is nice too.

Although marshmallows and dogs don't have the same wood-smoke flavour anymore it works well for that (and is much faster than waiting for a good coal-bed) even though the instructions caution against cooking over it. Much quicker to extinguish and go to bed too.

P.S. I don't like the spark-when-knob-rotated-from-Off-to-High igniter... Doesn't light on the first try because no propane, then Whoosh! on next try. Flashed all the hair off my knuckles a few times (slow learner). Now I hold a lit butane BBQ lighter through an air intake and it has been fine every time.

We got the one in the link below a few years ago ( $69 July4th sale). Certainly not a good as a real fire, but there are a few times where it had advantages. Ie: Rallies were units are too closely spaced for a real fire, under awning on a cold very rainy day, or a quick hour or so fire on a cold evening. we only take it on these trips.
