Question on filling freshwater tank

This is the second summer we have used our TT and never had this issue come up before. We just came back from our first camping weekend of this summer. My DH filled the freshwater tank as we entered the state park, as he always does. The second night of camping, the water tank was empty. That's with no showers, only about a gallon used washing dishes, and just mainly flushing the toilet for 2 people. I know the tank could not have been full. So the only thing DH thinks happened is if he had the water on too fast when he filled the tank and the water ran back out like it was full but maybe it wasn't. Could this be right or could something else be going on? We have never had this happen.

Did you note any wed spots on the ground where you were parked?

Low point drain caps on tight?

Once you filled the tank how far did you drive?

RV water tank syphon effect?

Water will sometimes syphon out of the overflow tube while driving.

Is the tank visible from some access point?

Do you not have a tank level gauge?

Ford Idaho's suggestions are all good as is your assessment of filling too fast.
Could have been any of those or a combination of several.

I know the 'idiot lights' are not always accurate but the fresh water ones are more so than the others.
Had you by chance checked them for a tank level after filling?

I'd say just filling to fast.....trapped air made it spit back like it was full...the vent tube is very small...

No water on the ground anywhere. Drain caps on tight. From the water fill station to our campsite was probably a mile at the most.

Hummm!

Any idea how long it took to fill the tank?

I use a small water meter in bought on Amazon. I know exactly how much water I put in tank, how much when flushing black water tank, how much we use on trip, etc.

I've had that happen before from filling too fast. I always check the tank gauge before pulling away from the water station.

I checked my fresh water fill by timing how long it took to fill a 5 gallon bucket. (~30 seconds). I know how long filling the potable onboard tank should take.

Rockwood 8280ws water tank capacity

The capacity on my 2016 Rockwood 8280ws, fresh water tank is 43 Gal.
After putting in 26 Gal the filler overflows and the gauge shows 2/3 with a blink of full. It should take at least 28 gal. to get to 2/3. Has Forest River put the wrong size tank in my rig? Has anyone else experienced anything like this?

tank full you think

I had the same thing with my tt. The vent tubes are small and you think it is full because it starts to spit out water from the vent tube. I use a filter (which is a good idea anyway) and that slows the fill. Also added a garden hose shut off so I can pause the fill when the vent starts to spit.

That's exactly what I did to get the number of gallons I was putting in. I checked it by emptying the tank five gallons at a time.

If it hasn't happened before it may more then likely as other have said filling it fast caused trapped air that gave the indication of the tank being full. Refill the tank and keep an eye on it.

I'm familiar with the narrow fill neck. I use a filler tube instead of just a hose to illuminate a lot of the air. After water started running out the filler, I shut the water off and lifted the trailer up and down several inches to see if there might be some trapped air. I tried to put more water in but it was full.

Thanks. Brand new rig, never been used except in my driveway. That's why I'm checking this thing out. I did this twice and was pretty careful. Thanks for your comments.

Agreed. That's why I checked myself by emptying the tank and measuring the output.
