Reserve America/ Active Advantage Scam - Beware

I want to bring this back up because I just got charged out of the blue for $64.95 yesterday. Capital One picked it up as fraudulent activity on my credit card yesterday and put a hold on my card. It shows up on your credit card as:
ACT*ACTIVE-NETWORK

I got an email confirming my membership

ACTIVE Advantage - 1 Year Membership

$64.95

Grand Total
$64.95

Amount Paid
$64.95

Order Balance
$0.00

After much research and canceling my credit card, it turns out that Reserve America is in bed with Active Advantage. So beware. When you go on Reserve America, without knowing your credit card info is being turned over to Active Advantage who signs you up for some kind of discount service (scam). You may start getting emails about a trial membership. Capital One gave me Active Advantage's phone number and I called them. The guy was rude as hell from the start but did say he was gong to credit my account. I had a 20 minute wait. I'm sure they are snowed under with complaints.

I would just advise everyone to search your inbox (as far back as you can) for ACTIVE Advantage or an email from info@get.active.com and make sure you are not getting ripped off.

Capital One credited my account without question but what bothers me is I thought Reserve America was a reputable site. I can't find a phone number on there website. Also Active America is not an accredited by the BBB and I have read of many complaints on this.

Before you blow this off, search your email and credit card. You make be surprised.

Don't know what you got signed up for!!
Not sure I'd call this a scam but I believe you when you say you got a bogus
charge. Have you used ReserveAmerica lately for reservations??

Just this morning I used ReserveAmerica to reserve a couple days at a
Kentucky state park. Have used them dozens of times over several states and the last several years with no problem.

When you reserve certain site with the active advantage icon you entice to save 10 dollars. I'm sure that's when they get you for membership. It's on some of the Virginia campgrounds.

No I haven't used Reserver America in over a year but I've been on the site. I'm not a novice to Reserve America either. Reserve America is owned by Active Network LLC. Just putting out this for what its worth. Capital One certainly called it fraud. So do I. Fl, La, or CO is where they apparently scammed me when I made my resv The issue I'm trying to bring forth is there are a lot of people like yourself and I who think Reserve America is not pulling a fast one. Check your email and card info.

As I said, I haven't made reservations on Reserve America since the middle of last year. Just got this email after talking to them this morning. I'm really surprised that Reserve America would operate like this. I didn't knowingly sign up for this which is why I call it a scam. I don't frivolously sign up for crap like this. I don't even know what it its? Funny it says free trial? For $65.

When I reserved today I was logged in but still had to enter my credit card number as usual. Gotta wonder how they got your card info if you were just browsing?

I reserved a site in SC about 3 months ago and had the same charge show up. In checking a second time, there is a box at the bottom that I should have UNCHECKED. I had my bank cancel payment, but I also emailed Active Advantage and with no hassle, they removed the charge.

I wouldn't call it a scam, but it sure is sneaky.

The only thing I can figure, is I made reservations for Zion in Utah in Jan. and they linked me to the Federal site because they don't reserve the Federal campsites apparently. I guess some how or another they signed me up. As someone mentioned, you have to "UNCHECK" a box to prevent being charge the membership fee. That's just dishonest. I'm PO'd about this. I may have paid $64 last Jan., I'm trying to figure that out.

Including me, I'm just saying, check your credit cards. Blow me off if you want to. And BTW, they got my credit card from the last time I reserved a site with them, that's obvious?

not blowing it off at all. Just don't think it's a scam. Sneaky marketing for sure. I just went through the whole check out process too see, right to the payment page, and saw no such thing. Not sure where they snuck it in on you.

unethical for sure. Sneaky way to do business, and Reserve America should be ashamed of themselves for helping them. Just wondering what needs to be watched for and unchecked. I use the site at least 15 times a year, and have never seen that.

Well, capital one's fraud department called me this morning to report the transaction to me and canceled my credit card. So "Bingo we've got a winner", tell me why they did that if something crazy didn't happen? You might want to look at your credit card. Or don't, I'm just trying to help.

Too Tall,

Thanks for the heads up. We will keep an eye out for this whenever we use ReserveAmerica - which is all the time since it is the reservation agent for the State of Colorado Parks system.

My credit cards (CapOne included) are set to send me an e-mail whenever my card is used on the Internet (not swiped) though, so we'd likely catch it pretty quickly. CapOne also emails me every time the card is used for anything over $1 so I see any charge almost instantly on my phone.

Still good to know. Thanks again!

a few years back, during the registration process, they would conspicuously hide magazine subscriptions. I know a few people that got snagged by not unchecking them.

Thanks, I was pretty impressed with Capital one's response on that. I've used Reserve America many, many times and this has never happened. It's the only way you can reserve most state parks.

after nosing around the site, I see that Reserve America IS Active Network LLC. So I wonder what you actually signed up for
