The new changes to Recreation.Gov ruined that site.

And it's absolutely HORRIBLE! The new system is slow, hard to use and glitchy.

Yes, and that is the fee for EVERY reserved day that you cancel, which can really add up, total rip-off! And especially since they don't have to do anything, the customer does it all online!

I'm fine if you need to pay the fee even if you cancel. Seems to me that people reserve sites and fill the park, to just not show up. Used to happen in the TT system all the time, now they charge a no show fee. If I need to cancel due to emergency or something it sucks, but if they really "add up" then you might be one of those filling the dates just to get a spot and not show up at the last minute. Keeping those who want to actually be there from getting a site.

Definitely not the way it worked for me. When I canceled a reservation, I got the money refunded less $8 or $9, depending on reserveamerica or recreation.gov. The campground also had a cancel fee.

Example. Book 4 nights at a state park and it was $24 * 4 + $9 = $105. Then, I cancel. The state park has a $10 cancel fee and the reserveamerica fee is nonrefundable. I get back $24 * 4 - 10 = $86.

Never seen a fee applied for each of the days that were reserved.

Thanks for the cross-post; some interesting insight in there regarding the new contract firm. About a third of that post is people reminiscing about historical computing systems (moderators? Hello?) and the rest is just complaining about the state of recreation.gov. Good to know I'm not the only one who hates it.

I'd have thought that the government agency would have owned the former website. The thread seems to imply that the govt merely leased any IP and website design from the former contractor. If true, that's a strange arrangement that would leave the government without any tangible assets at the conclusion of the contract.

There is a "transaction fee" tacked on to EVERY day you book, and you lose that fee when you cancel.
e.g.
Reservation Payment:
Use Fee $486.86
Transaction Fee $69.84 ($4.56 per day)
-------------------------------------
Total Paid $556.70

Refund Upon Cancellation:
Past Paid $556.70
Transaction Fee ($69.84)
Refund Due ($486.86)
New Amount Owing 0.00

Replace you with I and your statement is correct. When you use you, you're stating a common experience among everyone reading your post.

Again, it's not the way it works for me. Your signature states you're from Virginia. Might be a Virginia thing. Good luck.

This along with a cancellation fee is the reason I don't use them AT ALL!

I tried to use them once and ended up calling the state park because of a busy holiday week they couldn't accommodate my reservation in its' entirety. They worked with me and we agreed that I could stay the entire time but, would need to move to another site.....twice so, that was 3 different reservations in their system. That was OK with me as we had no other place to go....at the time and I paid in full. As it turned out though, we ended up being able to stay where we were. So I called to cancel. I fully expected to lose some money according to their sliding scale related to how close to your arrival date you cancel but, to also be charged a cancellation fee FOR EACH OF THE 3 RESERVATIONS really ticked me off!

Jeff, I found that out after we had made 2019 reservations in 2018. Started receiving notices from the WI site and thought somehow I was hacked.

Verified with RA who then directed me to the new site.
