I own vacation rentals here in the Smokies and camping while fun and loaded with intrinsic values of being in a national or state park, it always offered a cheap getaway. We usually camp in SPs when we head to Fla and when we go to Keys. I gotta say we get around 9 mpg towing the Roo. It took 8 tanks of gas in the 4 Runner to go to Fla and back this last trip.
If fuel continues to rise, we will forego camping in the Keys and find a vacation rental there. When we go to the Keys we tow the boat too, so my fuel traveling costs are doubled on these trips. Right now it costs about the same to travel down there towing a camper staying in a campground as it would for a 3 bedroom house rented for a week.
I will say increasing fuel costs will change a lot of families' vacation plans...
