Riding in travel trailers???

Stumbled on this link to learn more about the rules of the states we will be traveling through and was amazed at the number of states that allow riding in a travel trailer. All I can think of is the movie "The Long Long Trailer". Even if it is permitted, this is something that I would not feel comfortable doing.

A few years back we witnessed a tt come unhitched from the tv on the interstate. It immediately turned right, shot across the highway, and rolled down a steep embankment. I can't imagine a passenger inside could ever have survived a ride like that. I'm with you here Kevin. Not only uncomfortable about doing it, it just isn't safe.
It's hard to believe that it is still allowed anywhere.

I remember riding in my Grandparents 5er 15 or so years ago on a short trip to a local camp ground. I wouldn't do it in a travel trailer though, or a 5er on a long trip.

My wife went back to the TT one time and cooked a pizza in the oven. When it was done, she signalled by opening the awning window in the kitchen. I could see this from my outside mirror. I pulled over by the side of the road and we had fresh pizza for lunch. She did say it was kinda shakey back there. Pizza was good.

That's strange...it's unsafe anyway you look at it, gotta make you wonder the reasoning behind the states that do allow it!

Law like this should be universal state to state, IMO

As long as you have 2 way communication in Iowa its legal here.

Seriously though, I wouldn't dream of letting anyone ride in the camper.
I have seen a few camper accidents, and often there is nothing left but splinters.

Nice to see the law regarding parking in state rest stops overnight. Allowed in some and not in others and "as posted" in some.

If truckers can stay in their trucks overnight in a rest area, why can't we stay in our 5'r in a rest stop? We've done it in Iowa on our way to Branson many times with no problems....

Just ride in a trailer/5w around a parking lot with speed bumps. That should be your answer. In regards to stoping in a rest area,if I am tired I am going to stop! Youroo!!

When Amy is tired of driving she just pulls over to.

I couldn't imagine putting my family back there. But I've considered sleeping back on the bed (over the kingpin) when we're headed down the highway.

Not sure I'd ever do it- the few pictures of crashes I've seen look pretty brutal.

That said- how is it much/any different than being up and moving around in a motorhome? Or does everyone strictly stay buckled up in them?

Rod, the subject is about traveling in a trailer while moving. Nothing wrong with staying in it once you've parked it somewhere.

I'd have to imagine that a motorhome's suspension is a lot more substantial - and comfortable - than a travel trailer's, and a motorhome is designed to carry passengers at speed. I'm not sure a travel trailer is designed to meet those highway passenger standards. Just my speculation.
