rooftop air conditioner too noisy

We have a Viking 14R and we find that the rooftop air conditioner is very powerful for the size of our trailer. The problem is that we find that the ventilation system makes too much noise.

We cannot sleep with the air conditioning on and the fan never stops, even when the inside is cold enough. Is there a way of reducing the fan noise or making the air conditioning stop whet it reaches the appropriate temperature ?
We do not have a wall thermostat, all the controls are on the unit.

Hi Sylvie, I'm not familiar with your setup, but in my 5th wheel the thermostat has a fan setting of hi, lo, and auto. If the fan is not set to auto, it will constantly run.

On another thread, I saw that Sylvie had posted a link to a video of the unit they have and its a non-ducted A/C with the dial (analog) controls directly on the inside cover. If there is no fan speed control that is accessible (and I'm sure they would have noticed that by now) then there's probably nothing to be done with the current setup.

On yet another thread, she asked about getting hold of someone's Coleman-Mach analog thermostat that he's swapped out for a digital (same thing I'm in the process of doing). I don't know if this will be possible because their unit also has a built-in heat strip (heat strip is in place of a furnace in that TT). It is the same manufacturer (I think I can read Coleman-Mach on it from the video) but they make multiple models so it might not be compatible. Here's a link to all the thermostats they make: http://www.rvcomfort.com/pdf_documen...LOG_upload.pdf

If the inside cover is removable and if there are accessible terminals for the various control lines and if you can figure out how to run wall thermostat wires to the unit, it may be possible but I don't know if the Coleman-Mach analog from a setup with separate A/C and furnace will do it.

I also had a non-ducked AC, 13,500 BTU, in the bedroom of our fiver. We also had a ducked AC in the living area, 15,000 BTU. The one in the bedroom only had controls on the unit and even if you had it on low it made to much noise. My new fiver has two ACs that are ducked together each with their own thermostat, much better. You need two ACs if you RV in SE Texas during the summer unless you have a very small RV.

You would think that it at least has a temp control setting which would make it cycle off when temp reached. Later RJD

The manufacturer for Coleman-Mach is RV Products (RVP) a.k.a. Airxcel but I was unable to see a model that had a ceiling assembly that looked like the one in the video.

Maybe if you find the model number you could look it up and cross-reference it to the thermostat catalog I linked previously to see if anything is compatible. The model number could on be a build sheet with your documentation package (there was one that listed all the appliance models and serial numbers with our 5er) and will also be on a label you can access if you remove the filter like you are cleaning it.

However, unless the unit has two-speed fan capability (would have both a green and grey wire), a thermostat that causes the fan to run in auto-mode is likely to be no better unless you think an intermittent loud fan is better than a continuous one.

With analog controls the compressor shuts off but the fan does not when set temp is met.

Personally I love the noise.
