RV hierarchy

May ruffle some feathers with this question.
Just what constitutes an "upgrade" from one RV class to another?
I keep seeing threads that start something like "Upgrading from a trailer to a 5th wheel" or "Moving up from a 5th wheel to a class A".

Is there some unwritten ( or written ) progression from pop up to hy-bred, to trailer, etc, etc?

Is it based on size or price?

To me, if you have what is perfect for your wants and needs, going bigger or more expensive is not an upgrade. In fact, depending on your personal situation, it could be a downgrade. An example might be someone with mobility issues, that move "up" to a 5th wheel. All those extra steps might be ( to them ) a downgrade.

Just wondering.

In my opinion, if a member says "I'm upgrading to a hybrid", for instance, they view the move as an upgrade. I don't have any steam to tell them "that's not an upgrade... that's only a vertical move", etc.

It may be merely semantics... such as "I just picked up a new tow vehicle" when obviously they didn't.

My last upgrade was from a Class C to my Fifth Wheel. I'm sure there are others who have gone the opposite direction and considered it an an upgrade as well. To me the only thing that matters is that you are happy with whatever type of unit you chose.

Generally I think it's size and/or amenities.

Going from something you like to something you love.

Size, class or amenities don't matter.

Going from what you have, to what I have.

LOL (I can't help it.........)

I have no idea what the real answer is. However, clearly SOME moves are upgrades. We started with a pop up. Now in a 5th wheel weighing 15,000 lbs. By any stretch, that is an upgrade. But all those 'moves' in between? Geez, I dunno. I loved the Grey Wolf bumper pull.......that we had before the 5th wheel. It cost less, but did more in some ways and less in others. So, I guess when we moved to what we have, we both Upgraded and Downgraded!!! LOL

It's all semantics and what you make up to justify your next RV purpose

I see your train of thought... What aggravates me is... Entry level(maybe because I have one) or stick and tin... see, I opt for that. I personally will prolly never use an RV enough to have a mid or high end RV.

Buy what YOU want and think not if it's an upgrade or whatever.

I would say merely personal preferences, life changes, AGE ( ha ha ) just to mention a few.

Sometimes the upgrades we think we couldn't be without "then" all to soon becomes a reality and you CAN live without them, resulting in downgrade ( as in unused amenities ), if you may.....resulting as a much appreciated UPGRADE!

For us, although we loved our previous HTT, minus the tiny bathroom and the climbing over the dinette to get into bed, it was the same size as our current TT. Albeit, loving our now "self-contained" TT, resulting in less setup time with a walk-a-round Murphy bed. YES!!!!! A huge plus factor.

And the 1 step quickly became a 2 step for smoother transition inside ( once again.....that darn old age factor ) the TT.

Yep, mainly personal preferences, IMO, that life has a way of dictating as we get older. Change is good!

Depends on who you listen to, and who's opinion you consider worth anything.

Eye of the beholder. We Upgraded from a TT, to a 5th wheel to a larger 5th wheel to a Motorhome. To us, each was an upgrade based on what we wanted. It really doesn't matter what anyone else thinks.

Upgrade = To buy something that you feel is better than what you had previously.

Sometimes an upgrade is just "newer." For example, my wife just "upgraded" from a 2011 Chevy Traverse 2LT to a 2017 Chevy Traverse 2LT.

I'm going the other way. " upgrading" to a class C from a 42' fifth.

My trailer was simply too large for what we needed. Now, I'm about half as long as I was with truck and trailer, and feel that camping will be more enjoyable.

I agree....only a vertical move" ... to me an upgrade is going from the tires that come with your RV to something like Maxxis, going from a TT to a 5th wheel is just a vertical move base on our needs.
just an opinion
