RVing close to the Appalachian Trail

I would like to find a RV park as close as possible to the Appalachian Trail. My plan is to hike from my RV south for a few days than flip flop back to the RV. Repeat the same thing going North. I do see some parking lots at trail heads, its just those parking lots seem too small, isolated... Perfect for someone to break into the RV. Looking for RV spot anywhere along the trail. The whole 2100 miles. I do understand hiking is not a good idea during the winter time.

Thank You.

Harper's Ferry is on the trail and there is a KOA there. Ask them or the parking lot of the park. Saw vehicles in the parking lot after closing.

I switched my numbers. I looked into through hiking about 8 years ago before I got a govt job with a pension that I cant just walk away from. Im sure you know the time of year would also play a big part.

Yes, I'm aware that winter time hiking is not advisable and RV parks maybe closed.

STANDING INDIAN Campground ..... Franklin NC

https://www.recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/234228

" The campground provides access to numerous trails, including the world-famous Appalachian Trail, which journeys from Georgia to Maine. "

and

AMICALOLA FALLS Campground .... Dawsonville, GA

https://www.amicalolafallslodge.com/

" This towering waterfall is located 7.5 miles by hike from the southern end of the Appalachian Trail at Springer Mountain, and it’s the closest access point to the AT via paved roads. The AT Approach Trail departs from the crest of this waterfall, trailing to the Springer Mountain summit. It’s at Springer that the Appalachian Trail begins its 2000+ mile, epic journey northbound for Maine, a hike attempted every year by thousands of AT thru-hikers. "

Pine Grove Furnace State Park in Pennsylvania is just a mile or two away from the nominal 1/2 way point of the AT. There's a small AT museum there (or at least used to be) and a small store that did a 1/2 gallon challenge with ice cream that is popular. And it's beautiful to boot.

Rig size can be an issue with the park.

I was also going to suggest Pine Grove but be aware that water is available you need to fill your onboard tank as you enter or have a ton of hose.
It's been a while since we visited but I think Greenbrier state park in Md is also very close to the AT.

Loft mountain campground in Virginia. It’s on Skyline Dr. and the trail runs right beside it. No hook ups but water and dump station are available. Some sites don’t allow generators.

There is also Caladonia State Park in PA - it is only 10 or 15 miles south of Pine Grove, it can be an alternative. The AT runs right through it as well.

trail access

not sure if they are right on the AT but Devils Backbone brewery in VA has RV (full hookups) & camping. You might not make it to the trail if you stay there though!

Big Meadows campground in Shenandoah National Park in Virginia. Trail goes thru campground. Dry camping, water and dump station available. We enjoy staying at this campground. Reservations may be needed.

Worthington State Forest is a state forest located within the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, just off of Route 80 above the water gap, in Warren County, New Jersey. Campsites along the Delaware River and you can hike from NJ to NY or into Pennsylvania. One of my favorite State camp grounds

As of a couple years ago the AT museum was still there.

Pine Grove PA there is Twin Grove RV Resort, it is 3 walkable miles from the trail as I did it on a short section hike.

Here is another one in PA - Blue Rocks Family Campground in Lenhartsville PA has a 1 mile hike to the AT near the Pinnacle (famous lookout in PA).

When to get to MA. go to Fernwood Forrest campground. It is in Hinsdale MA. and 1 mile from the AT. I'm there for 4 months in the summer.

Hanover, New Hampshire

The Storrs Pond Recreation Area in Hanover, NH has a small number of RV sites available for reservation. The AT goes southbound from Hanover by crossing the Connecticut River into Vermont. Northbound from Hanover takes you up into the White Mountains of New Hampshire, crossing multiple 4000+ foot peaks and Mount Washington; the highest mountain in the Northeastern US.

Hope this helps.
