Have full-timing friends that hit the Kansas Amazon on their way from the Crazy Horse monument (summer job) to Texas for the winter job (camp host). They love the circuit they run every year and are having the time of their lives. They end up working about 9 months a year and traveling 3 months, so it is not like they travel directly from job to job. However, they make enough money to live, pay the insurance on the bus, and buy fuel. They do not have to hit their 401k's to keep up their lifestyle. Since they are in their late 50's they do not draw social security, just GM pensions and what they make on the road.
My wife and I talk about selling the house and running away all the time. One of these days we are going to pull the trigger and hit the road also. We want to get out and go while we are still healthy enough to enjoy it and young enough to get odd jobs to cover the expenses along the way. Not looking to have a career, just cover expenses to keep from wiping out the 401k's.
