We run our heat pump when we're plugged in so we can heat without using gas.

So is it just an electric heating element?

No, a heat pump reverses the cooling cycle and uses the refrigerant to heat till the outside air drops to around 40º. Below 40º elect heat strips or a gas unit does the job

Actually, we have the Dometic heat pump and it will use the heat pump for heat until outdoor temps drop to 30F. It then switches to the furnace for heat and returns to the heat pump when outdoor temps hit 35F. Living in Central Florida, we only get a little use out of it when we travel in the spring and fall but it works great.

Our 2012 Flagstaff 8528RKWS only has one and it cools just fine. On our trailer we have no need for the 2nd ac. Ours is ducted and works great even in FL from Nov until Feb or Mar as well as in NC in the summer.

Honestly, the single A/C in our old 5er worked fine also. On the hotter days it would run constantly though to keep it down in the high 70's. Once the sun went down then we could get the temp down around 72.

But, have the option to get a 2nd one and it does not sound like a bad idea.
