Security Threat from this site??

I have successfully been using this wonderful site for a couple of months now but all of a sudden I'm getting notification from my WebRoot Antivirus that it can't verify the safety of FRForums. In addition I'm now getting pop ups that interrupt my communication with FRForums and tell me to add SearchLock on to my Chrome Browser. I DO NOT WANT to this and haven't and I'm really bugged by being interrupted with these pop ups. Is anyone else having this same problem??? Thanks!

Hi,

I developed that same problem 6-8 weeks ago on my android smartphone. No ad blocker I tried helped. My antivirus package says I'm clean. When I posted about it, nobody else had a good answer.

So I now browse this site with Firefox, and have not had any further problems.

FWIW.

The "can't verify safety" piece might be because this site presents as HTTP rather than HTTPS, which is less than ideal but not uncommon.

SearchLock is yet another junk search engine.

And no, I'm not experiencing any of this on Windows 10 and Chrome.

I occasionally get similar pop ups on my un-protected Kindle but I use FireFox and AdBlock plus on my desktop. Zero pop-ups on the desktop.

On my work PC I have been losing the forum too. It’s a pop-up of some sort saying it’s Google security bla bla something. I X’d out several times, but the < takes me back to the forum. I was gonna get our IT dude to look at it, but I have been busy at work. It’s been going on for a couple weeks maybe. No problems on my iPhone.

The webroot issue may be the result of a missing or outdated certificate. I am guessing the other ones are just scare warnings trying to get you to purchase some additional software ( real or fake). These may be coming via the browser and not FRF. I use Firefox as chrome is famous for things like that. The new Firefox just released is very nice.

Could you please substantiate "chrome is famous for things like that"?

Generally speaking, when one sees a message that tries to coax you to add something to your browser, then chances are you have some kind of adware or spyware in your system. Spyware/Adware will sometimes disguise its messages as an Antivirus software warning message directing the user to install another piece of software.
As of today, as far as I can tell, this site is not the issue. Use a different browser to see if you get the same message. Or, if you have another computer handy, try using that computer to visit the same page and see what you get.

I refuse to use Chrome as I have had issue in the past with this on my desk top computer. Chrome always wanted additional anti-virus programs to be installed which I will not do.

Every time I have a program update from any software I check to make sure Chrome is not installed on my PC.

I've been using chrome on my macbook for two years or more never a problem. I also use chrome on my Iphone for a browser. I use Firefox on our desktop PC. Chrome didn't play well with the PC.

After many decades in IT, I have found user complaints of these types are almost always self inflicted. Check your security settings, update everything to latest patch, run a full scan, be careful of what you click on.

Chrome used to be my favorite browser, despite it's limits, because of it's speed. Firefox was next, but it's having a hard time keeping up. Now, to my great surprise, my browser of choice is Microsoft Edge! Very fast, has most of the bells and whistles, enjoyable to use.

Again, most problems with adware is because you clicked something on a questionable website and downloaded some crap. Lots of articles out there on how to avoid this.

Not an issue with the website. Your equipment needs updating. Update Windows, browser and your antivirus. What are you using for that? Porn sites? [emoji16] An additional app to run after your antivirus check is a free program called Malwarebytes. Good luck. [emoji1360]

I agree but it is not always user error...I run a few wordpress sites and found that the cache had been corrupted on the site. If you came in via a specific IP range (mobile phone with 2 carriers) it would tell you there was a virus on your phone. It was reading the user-agent and IP address because if you changed browsers or went to WiFi no issues. Also no issues from a PC using the phone as a hotspot.

I cleared the cache on the web server and it would go away for a bit and then come back. I ended up turning off the cache and it resolved the issue completely. It was interesting to figure out but took some time.

Be careful of 'free' downloads of any kind of checker. Research it first. Most free downloads remove other folks spyware/adware and install their own

Yes! I never download anything that looks suspicious or puts an extension on my browser.

I just "reset" my Chrome Browser and I'm going to see if that helps with the problem I've been having with unwanted pop ups, etc on this site.

So far it seems to have solved the problem -- time will tell.
